Driver too upright.. how is ball flight impacted?

bombs

Recommended Posts

My G410+ sits VERY upright at address, almost oddly so. Fortunately I can set it to 3* flat which I plan to experiment with.

But was interested in understanding how a driver that is TOO upright would impact ball flight?

I understand the concepts of shaft droop, and am well aware of lie angle impact on irons, but could find zero good information about drivers.

My current miss is an excessive draw bordering on snap hook.

We would need launch monitor data to know for sure.

Did you get fitted for the driver? If not, you might schedule a tune-up fitting to get it tweaked properly for your stance and swing.

This is the biggest frustration I have with the G410+. I think it’s the best driver on the market and every time I play it I love the feel. My miss is also losing the ball left with it. If I put it on the flat setting I lose it right. I don’t know if there’s something in-between? I’ve tried to put the weight in the fade setting, but that feels “off” to me. I might try everything neutral and put a bit of lead tape in the slot where the fade screw hole is.

I had the exact same conclusion after completing my first round of testing.

I will continue to experiment with the weights, lie angle and opening the face to combat my draw miss.

If a robot was swing the club - it's roughly about 2-3 yards offline for each 1* the lie angle changes for someone who hits driver about 250 yards. So 6 to 10 yards offline for the 3*.
But with people, the visual change of the club at address can play mind games on some people - so testing is always the best way to find out.
Those numbers are also assuming the face impact location on the face stays the same. So when testing it's a good idea to bring some foot powder spray to check if the impact location moves. Especially if you are getting big changes like @pmang

I can't speak to the effectiveness on a Ping club, but if you're frustration is at a point that you're willing to try something radical, try this:

I have a TM RBZ Black 2.0. It's the rerelease model from 2017 or so that is a price point driver. I was having an awful time with duck hooks and came to the conclusion that lie angle was probably at least partially responsible. I had consulted with TM a couple of years back about adjusting an SLDR hybrid for lie angle and was told that if you insert the shaft in the head 180° from the std. N position that you will change the lie angle. It worked perfectly for the hybrid 4 I had in curing my consistent cut. I decided to take a chance and see how doing the same thing might affect the driver with respect to the hook tendency and it seems to have fixed that problem for me. When I pulled the driver shaft I noticed that the adjustment adapter says LH (I'm a righty) when you insert the shaft at 180° from std. N.

I haven't been on a monitor or even had the club in a loft and lie machine to determine how the specs have been affected, but my hook is gone. With this particular adjustment the driver looks to have a more open face angle from the address position. I made the adjustment mid round a couple weeks back with a borrowed Titleist tool.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I just hit 100 balls at the range and had some very interesting results from experimenting with the adjustability of the G410+.

Driver stock setting (9*) = Toe very upright at address. Bad miss is a big draw bordering on hook, the shot I want to take out of my game.Driver stock setting (9*) + Weight in Fade setting = Toe very upright at address. Introduced an occasional big fade in addition to my big draw.Driver 3* flat = Toe sitting more 'normal' looking at address. Draw was less pronounced. Still likely to miss fairway left much more than I like.Driver 3* flat + Loft -1* (Open face) = Ball flight dead straight. Launch far too low causing significant distance loss. Driver 3* flat + Loft +1* (Closed face) + Weight in Fade setting = Ball flight very straight to a soft fade. Good launch conditions.

What I found is that movement of the 12G weight has a far more material impact on shot direction than opening or closing the clubface. By opening/closing the club face you can somewhat negate the impact of the weight movement.

I feel that if I stick with the G410+ driver longer term the optimal setup for me would be a 10.5* head adjusted to -1* to open the face slightly, with the weight in the default setting.
