What do you know about this putter?

Hey guys,

I just snagged this thing on ebay for $62 shipped. Im not all that worried about the wear on it, but I figured I could post this on here and someone would be able to tell me a little about the putter. Its my first bettinardi and im excited to send the scopy to time out. I plan on giving it a quick restore and slapping some lead tape over the benz logo.

Head weight? Head material? Model name? Recommended restoration method? Any reviews from users?

I would also enjoy any insight on the man, Robert J. Bettinardi and/or pictures of his work.

I'd be guessing the head weight so I'm not even going to try :)

These particular putters were given away during the Mercedes Championship PRO-AM. This putter was milled from what they called X metal that is very very soft. I'm 99% sure Bettinardi will not refinish putters made from this material but you might want to email the studio to find out.

How do you think it would turn out if i coked and sanded it a little? Or just wont know until I do it?

I have a BHB4-X. Same material. Tarn-X will have it shining like a new penny. If you have dings to take out I would recommend a scotch-brite pad. If you scrub in the same direction it would look pretty good without having to send it out to anyone.

If you use the scotch brite pad on the topline, it will create micro grooves that will diffuse the sunlight. You shouldn't have a problem. Also, the once shined up, the finish will darken over time like a copper putter or the Ping manganese broze putters.

As far as Bettinardi the man goes, his shop is in Chicago. There used to be a couple of decent Youtube vids that showed his shop. You might want to search and see if you can find them. His is a bit different take on putters than Scotty, Mills, and some other big name putter makers IMO. Good luck!

If you want glare resistant, let it patina naturally. It'll cut the glare like the old MnBr or BeCu pings once it's oxidized.

If you want to give it a beautiful black-ox look scuff the head with the scotch-brite pad (make sure and do the entire head for an even result) then submerge the head into a plastic container filled with liquid plumber for 2-3 hrs. the resulting finish is quite nice looking and highly durable! If you want you could then take some fine grade steel wool give the head an antique brass look.
