Pebble Beach raising rates (again)

Recommended Posts

From $425 To $450
Within the last year, Pebble Beach Golf Links has experienced some changes, including the addition of five new bunkers along the left side of the fairway on No. 15. Soon, there will be a change in the pro shop. Beginning Saturday, the green fee for Pebble Beach Golf Links will jump from $425 to $450 per round.

In recent years, the Pebble Beach Company has annually raised the green fee for the world-famous layout eight percent. The change for fiscal year 2006 marks a five percent increase. In 2002, the green fee was $375.

"It's a little less of an increase than we've had in the past, yet it's consistent with what's happening across the country in regards to high-end resorts," Pebble Beach Company CEO Bill Perocchi said.

Among other high-end resorts that have recently seen green fee increases include Whistling Straits in Wisconsin (12 percent), Oregon's Bandon Dunes (17 percent) and Georgia's Sea Island (9 percent).

Already set to host the 2010 U.S. Open championship, Pebble Beach Golf Links has for years been ranked the No. 1 Public Course in America according to Golf Digest. The course, which opened in 1919, is currently ranked No. 6 among all private and public U.S. courses. In 2001, the course was ranked No. 1 overall by Golf Digest panelists.

Pebble Beach Golf Links' sister courses -- Spyglass Hill, The Links at Spanish Bay and Del Monte Golf Course -- also will have slight increases. Starting Saturday, the fee at Spyglass Hill will go from $290 to $300 (3 percent), while the fee at The Links at Spanish Bay will go from $230 to $240 (3 percent). The fee at Del Monte GC will go from $100 to $105 (5 percent).

do they have replay rates, or if you play spyglass or spanish bay that day you get a reduced green fee? typically when i play a nice resort i'll play 36 holes, make a day out of it, and there are some serious cost savings. played turtle point and the ocean course at kiawah island. payed full price, $190 for turtle point and payed the "replay rate" at the ocean course of $90. less than $300 for what would have cost $470 if i played them seperately.

I checked on their website a few months ago (my brother just played there so I was curious) and the rate was $500 if you were no staying at the resort. I read in an article which stated the fees in the early 1980's was $40.

Yes, the replay rate is $450. :idhitit:

Seriously, I played Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach and Poppy Hills last November and don't recall seeing a replay discount. They could charge almost anything they want and the tee sheet would still be booked solid. They get so many corporate outings and tourists who don't blink an eye at the fee.

When I played Pebble, I showed up at 6:45 a.m. as a single and didn't get out until 1:30 p.m. It's that busy.

Guys, come on, it's PEBBLE BEACH! Where else can you feel rich and be treated as such. Where else can you play half a course's holes where the ocean is in play. I don't care what it costs, next year I'm playing the course. I'm making the tee time sometime soon, to make sure I have my slot. It's a one shot deal, and it's worth it in my opinion. But, I plan on playing it when I'm 18 (next year) and maybe 1 or 2 more times later in life If I'm lucky.

I played Pebble Beach in 1999 before the US Amatuer and it was $295 with a $35 cart fee. It was about the time it changed ownership to its current owners. I will do it again if I have the chance. There are better courses but it's the history and the scenery that it make it worth the money. If your a real golf nut it's a must do at least once. By the way it took over 5 hours was drizzling and in the 50's and it was GREAT.

Then, add St Andrews and Augusta and you can die and go to Golf Heaven.

No doubt, the cost is significant and many people will choose to downgrade the course in comparison to others they have played.

But I would offer two considerations. As someone mentioned, the tee sheet is almost full every day. The course gets a ton of play in all kinds of weather and if people are willing to pay $450, then that's a fair rate for playing PB.

Secondly, the cost is set as much for the experience as the golf and I would argue in that sense, its way undervalued. Personally, I think the golf is wonderful. Unlike so many courses, its so easy to remember every hole, every shot and distance, and replay it over in your mind anytime you'd like.

I took my dad to play there last week. We stayed at the Lodge and I must admit that I winced a bit when I set our reservations and paid for the trip back in December. For our three days, we had sunshine and highs in the 60's. Surprisingly, the treatment by the folks at the Lodge and the courses overshadowed the weather. They were wonderful.

The course was wet when we played with no roll. Two of us played from the back tees, and I would be somewhat skeptical of anyone who'd argue that PB doesn't present a wonderful test.

Like I said, regardless of the actual cost, I've replayed our rounds at SG, PB and CP over in my mind several times a day since we've come back....hell I'm guessing my effective cost is now about $35 a round. The courses were great, the pictures even better and the memories will last a lifetime.
