Looking for a new flatstick and have it narrowed to the Redwood Anser or Cameron Newport 2. Pros/cons on either?

The Anser shape is different from the Newport 2, which is more like an Anser2 so you might prefer one look over the other.

Personally I prefer everything about the Redwood but the finish. The nickel looks beautiful but glare can be an issue on occasion, and the alternate black finish will wear over time if that is a concern to you. However, you can get other finishes via WRX.

The Scotty is likely to hold its value longer if that is important. Of course that also makes it more likely to be stolen.

I went Redwood after many of a Scotty Cameron. Mine is the black Answer as I have always been a fan of the Scotty 3x black options but never wanted to shel out the $$$. If you treat the putter right it would be impossible for the finish to wear off... Think about it... Dont use it as a crutch when you are waiting to putt and dont drag the bottom of the putter on the green and you will be ok. I also really like the starshot finish Ping offers and will pick up another soon sporting this.

Thanks for the input. I was all set to buy a SC..well, you know why..it was an SC...then the Redwood came calling. Maybe it was because the sales guy was badmouthing it that I started to really like it. Anyone have the Starshot finish from WRX?

Blckngld - hope you are a Steeler fan!

Starshot finish is a must. Better than the other 2 finishes. I think it is a small upcharge. It is also nice that you can get a sight dot or line or both with the Ping. And you can specify the headweight. If they need to add tungsten it is more but a nice option nonetheless. Good luck!

+1

If you go with the Redwood, get the Starshot.

I had the Nickel Redwood Anser, and I sold it because of the awful glare...it was like looking down at a mirror. Other than that it was a great putter. As far as the Black Satin finish, members here have had problems with durability, which is usually the case with any black finish on stainless.

get the newport 2...pay lets just say 250 for it, and then two years from now, in used condition, sell it for 150.
You wont get that kind of resale value out of the anser, so price shouldnt be an issue.
Of course we know scottys are great quality and prestige.

But if you get the Ping you wont want to get rid of it in two years!

They are both nice putters. Couple of things to consider though:

1. The Redwood Anser and Newport 2 are different shapes. If you really like the Anser it might be worthwhile looking at the standard Newport as well. The Newport 2 is basically an Anser 2, which against an Anser is slightly different.

2. If you are interested in customization, Ping will out perform Scotty Cameron. Via Ping WRX you can have a variety of things done: choice of 3 or 4 finishes, shaft choices, head weighting to the gram, sound slot, different types of face milling and so on and so forth. It is expensive but generally speaking Ping are only too willing to help and will do a great job. With Scotty Cameron's you are limited to length, grip and head weight... turns out the "Custom Shop" isn't all that custom after all.

3. Off the shelf, with Ping you are limited to Black Satin and Black Nickel and both are problematic; Black Satin isn't all that durable and Black Nickel produces a LOT of glare. This won't be an issue with the Studio Select.

4. This is probably a good thing to know ahead of time... but if you buy the Ping and things don't work out, the resale value on a Redwood Anser is not great. There is a much bigger market for Scotty Cameron's... and as such offloading the putter should things not work out won't be a problem.

5. Most importantly... which putter do you feel like you will hole the most putts with? Because that's all that really matter right? Getting the ball in the hole.

Is there anywhere on the Ping website that sets out all the options for Redwood customisation?

Last time I checked, they were still running with the Fall WRX brochure which did not have much info at all other than shaft options

Call Morton Golf Sales ..... they have it.
Any sample pics of this starshot finish?

Thanks.

i personally like the redwood more -- i enjoy the clickier sound ping putters give, seems like theres more feedback there. also while both putters are pretty simple the redwood seems to be sleaker looking and not at fat as the scotty but that could just be me.

Great looking putter drpino. That Starshot finish is sweet. I have a really old Anser I liked a lot and then started experimenting with the Craz-e, G2 series, etc. and want to get back to a simple all metal putter. What weight is that head?

I have the black satin Redwood and keep the cover on it while in the bag to minimize chatter and the finish has held up fine. Your results may vary. (If the finish on the face or sole starts to go from contact with ball/ground, those are not the surfaces you need to suppress glare. ) If I had to do it over again I might order the starshot however.
