Original Cleveland 588 RTG Wedges Still Out There?

Recommended Posts

Are the original Cleveland 588 wedges available with conforming grooves? I'm thinking the original 60* wedge that had 3* bounce with a lot of camber? If they exist anyone know where to get one? Is this a tour only deal or non-existent? I though I've seen these but I haven't been able to find any pictures.

I have 4 of them with conforming grooves (RTG's): 49, 54, 60, and 64. It is getting harder and harder to find them and even those with connections struggle.

Up till a few weeks ago I still gamed the original 588 wedges that I purchased back in 1999. The groves are still perfect but it was just time for the old boys to retire. Looked at the 588 forged and the feeling was just not the same. Had to go to mizuno jpx wedges to get the same feel off the face. They are now part of my backup set.

On the link posted, it shows the grooves as "u" grooves. I didnt see anywhere (unless I am an idiot, which I may be), that showed these grooves as being conforming. Mine all marked conforming. Can anyone verify?

I have four of them and still am holding on to them. The grooves were getting a little worn so I redid them with a groove tool, probably not legal for tournament play but that's ok.

Two of them are currently in the bag and am loving it.

When your first buy an item it's hard to know if it will become a classic but after a few years when you think it's on the road it's time to buy one or more again.

I grew up on 588's and always loved how buttery they were. Cleveland must have been cutting a few corners in their production techniques over the last few years CG's were pretty harsh seems like their wedges were cast of a brittle harsher feeling material simply had no more feel... But old 588's were incredible along with RTG's and their tour issue grinds were definately some of the best wedges ever made.....

Marc has all the wedges, he is a good buddy. He has a couple things that people ask for that are non conforming but everything else is.
He is certainly the place to go to. I know he is working on grinding Henrik Stensons wedges as well now for Piretti. He has been around professional golf for 25 years as a player manager, club tech, equipment manager, etc.. his store is the only TOUR licensed store for Cleveland, Srixon, YES tour putters, Never Compromise Tour putters, Piretti Tour and Limited Putters, Adams tour, and a few others. As he is out on tour he gets the best of the best. I have used him for my wedges for 15 years probably. He is in Texas, is sick and cannot travel on tour much and due to that the reps and companies help him out with things until he can get back out. he has some kindney and liver problems. I recommend him 100% Check him out at yourtourcollection on the web

I just spoke to Marc at yourtourcollection.com and ordered some original 588s (with conforming grooves). I originally just emailed the website to inquire if these wedges had conforming grooves and if the Cleveland 51 vs 53 would be better as a gap wedge..

Marc called me the same day to chat and I was so impressed, I had to order a three wedge set (51, 56, 60) in black pearl.

A wonderfully nice guy with some difficult life circumstances. I learned he is/was a career tour tech guys who due to some health issues, is no longer able to travel with the tour.

Given his relationships with some OEM tour departments, in this case Cleveland, due to his illness, they have given him the exclusive ability to sell tour level equipment to non-tour players.

In our conversation, I felt like I had access to a tour van as he literally picked out the heads with the specific bounce, finish, and other characteristics that fit my needs. This level of service for only $90/wedge!

I may have to order these in RTC too....Will report back when the wedges arrive on Friday.

Great thread, and awesome info and link about Marc's website. I'm tempted to order a set of these, just to support Marc. The original 588 wedges have a fair bit of sole camber don't they? The current rendition have a sharp leading edge and almost no camber which turned me off.

I spoke to Marc on Monday and was so impressed, I ordered on the spot (588s in Black Pearl, 51, 56, 60) and just received the wedges today (Thursday).

Expect to put them in play tomorrow (and Sat and Sun). Incredible wedges, attractive prices. I will probably get these in RTG also just to stockpile. This opportunity to get tour issue wedges won't last forever.

As long as they say tour zip grooves, they are conforming. the wedges won't say that on the face, what they do is put it on the hosel, tour guys want nothing on the face at all, I know Marc has over 1,000 of them, he is working on and off tour when he can. He does have the only Cleveland tour account licensed. He has worked with the tour dept for 20 years or so. Check him out at the links in the thread.

He is really good to his long time customers. I have been buying from him for 10 years or so. Tell him you bought from him , his memory is not so good with the Kidney failure. Once you remind him, he is right on the money with you and more than happy to discount your next purchase. I bet I have bought 15 sets of wedges over the years and probably 8 of them were 588's. The carbon in them makes the feel incredible and you just can't beat the looks.

I saw this thread and it struck enough interest for to look through my backup clubs I don't use and I do have a Cleveland 588 RTG.I believe it is Tour Issue because I don't buy retail and I have a micrometer to verify the internal measurements of the hozel, just need a new battery. It is a Raw head that has dark blue torch finish to it. I can tell it has been hit a few times due to some scuff marks on the sole but other than that it's in great shape. If anyone has any interest just let me know and I can email a few pics, may consider trade.....

Sorry to dig up such an old thread but this seemed most relevant... I'm having a hard time replacing my original 60.3* 588 RTG. Every club I try either a) has too much bounce or b) has a grind that promotes too much digging/sliding...

What I liked about the original was it had almost a full grind (with a longer, flatter sole similar to the vokey K grind) but the low bounce makes it a weapon around the greens and from the trap.

Has anyone found a wedge similar to the original 60.3* 588 RTG that they could recommend to me?
