Ordering a Custom Slighter

Just want some advice

Slighter Owners and Fans,

I am looking to order a center-shafted Newcastle to use as a belly putter. I sent in a request for a quote a while back for a carbon steel model in the triple black, but with the order form the way it was, I was not able to adequetly specify exactly what I wanted. I got a quote back that was very reasonable, but a little more than I wanted to spend. I have heard that Tom is great about answering all sorts of questions about builds, so I emailed him back all of the questions I had. (Is the price different for stainless steel, what kind of belly putter shafts/grips he has available, and what the black putter finishes are like for each type of steel?) I am sure Tom gets all sorts of questions all the time and is very busy, but I haven't heard back in a while.

Should I just submit another request and attach all of the exact shape, stamping, weight, and shaft details that I want, or should I try reconnecting with him through the initial quote and change it?

I am very excited about this whole process, but I have lots of ideas and I don't know how much any of the options will cost. I'm just looking for some advice from the many people who have already worked with Tom.

Tom's a really nice bloke and is normally fairly prompt with returning e-mails so I'd imagine he may have just forgot or been away for a while. Try e-mailing him again through the conversation you already have going with your revisions to your initial information, the next stage is for him to send you a formal spec sheet with your specs, design choices and requests on it, and then you can revise that before it is finalised. If you feel that the concept has become a bit lost in lots of e-mails you could ask him if it would be easier to start from the quote process again.

 

Also when you get the formal spec list it will come with an itemised quote so you know what you're paying for what work.

I would also say to email him through the initial quote again, & as suggested perhaps start the process again.

No help to you on the belly putter shafts and what's available ( you really need to talk to Tom), but the black finish he does on the stainless putters is certainly well wearing. I got my first Slighter in '06 and the finish has only started to partially come off the sole, rest of the putter looks like new. I think there may be a difference in price between the stainless & carbon steels, but again Tom can answer that for you. He answers all the emails himself so I reckon with the amount of queries he gets each week your last mail probably got overlooked.

The order form didn't allow for full descriptions in some boxes so I sent an accompanying e-mail and it was great. If things got to complex because I had too many questions about something, I called him on his cell phone, then wrote it up in my email to him.

 

Nicest guy I ever dealt with, rapid responses/confirmations. etc. and he documents everything. It was my first custom, I know nothing about making a putter and I really went crazy with the design. We exchanged at least 30 emails and he was always pleased to hear from me.

 

I remain absolutely thrilled by his creation. It's been my gamer since day 1 while dozens of quality flatsticks collect dust. The design isn't most people's cup of tea, but you can't argue with the quality of his craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Just contact him again. He's usually very prompt but he may have gotten a little behind.

For what its worth, way earlier this year i emailed him and got back a couple very personal and informative replies...right away.

...however a couple mths ago...I emailed again with a question....and nothing...almost three mths and no reply. A reply is not necessary after all this time...i have moved on...but it is hit or miss..so either recommend moving onto all the other custom builders...or if set on him...email him again..

 

if the pattern is right...he replies to every other email so you should get a reply on this one real quick :tongue:

Your putter is an absolute work of art. My 1st choice for a putter would be the Needle as it is very similar to my current gamer (Baby Ben), but I cannot handle anything but a center shaft. While I am sure Tom could do it, looking at the typical shaft position means $$$ to change. Maybe in another 10 years. To me the Newcastle is the next best choice.

I would just try to e-mail Tom again! He is a great guy. I absolutely love the putter he built for me last year. IT was money well spent. I haven't found another putter out there yet that would take my Slighter's place in the bag!

I just got my first Slighter and can say my work with Tom was amazing. He would send me an email back every morning if I had sent him one the day before. There were a couple times when I got no response, so I emailed him again. He said he gets a whole bunch of emails and sometimes by accidently doesn't see it or doesn't get to it.
