Sky Caddie 3.5 vs. 5

Recommended Posts

3.5 Production Problems
Am a 4 year SG2 user. All in all, satisifed with unit. As of late, it has been slow to find satelites. Sometimes I am 15 minutes into the round, hole 3 or 4 before it locks in. All things consedered, I have been very pleased with the unit, especially since I got it with pro shop credit! However, I now feel it is time to upgrade. After reading all the problems with the 3 & 4, glad I did not go that route. Was impressed with the 2.5 when I saw some online stores offering the 3.5. When I did not see it offered on the SG website, I did some research and found out that it is having production problems and will not be out until after the first of the year.

My questions:
1. Since the SG5 unit appears to be a proven unit, do I want to go with one that is having production problems already.
2. The 3.5 runs on regular AA batteries. As much as I hate re-charging the unit, do I want to go that route not knowing how it will burn thru the batteries.

Like the smaller size of the 3.5 vs. the 5...but just have reservations about a new model. Especially with SG's reputation for customer support.

If you are going with the Skycaddie and like small, the 2.5 is a great unit and slightly smaller than the 3.5.

If batteries are a high priority then maybe wait it out?

The 5.0 had some pretty good package deals if you look at some of the other threads and can still find it...otherwise not sure it's worth the extra price over the 2.5

I have had the SG5 for a year or so now and love the unit, the up side I see is the screen is larger (I am older! and had two of the SG2's and had trouble seeing the screen) and loving it, I just check the battery meter after each round and recharge when needed (about every two rounds) for safety, I have gotten three rounds out of it but one was by myself and played in less than two hours. I have found mine to be very reliable and picks up the satilites very quickly (faster then the SG 4's that friends have) I can't see myself using anything else. I didn't buy it for the color screen but it is nice to look at! Just my thoughts on it.

I've had the 3.5 for a year. The batteries go about a round and a half. I bought an inexpensive 4 battery charger and 4 rechargeable batteries in a package from Home Depot, and I just always put fresh batteries in before each round. I have not had any problem with this method in several dozen rounds.

The 3.5 is a brand new unit that is just being introduced. It hasn't been out for a year, so you probably have the SG3, which also ran on AA batteries. The 3.5 utilizes the ublox chip which is way better than the SG3, which was actually the Magellan unit. Apparantly, its introduction has been further delayed due to some sanfu.

The SG5 takes about four hours to recharge in it has gone down to a low battery level.

When you start your Sky Caddie regardless of model when you get to the screen that shows the globe & flashing satellites make sure you leave it on that screen till you get 4 solid satellites. After that is should locate the course you are at on it's own. Most people don't let the unit start & get it's location correctly before they just blow by that screen.
