Who is Adam Hadwin & Is Sub 60 The New Sub 4 Minute Mile?

On a serious note, do you think where guys used to be tentative and squeamish when they got to -10 to 12, depending on par, that they are now of a different psyche and just shooting for pins?

All the Best,

RP

i think more guys shoot at more pins everyday honestly.... players like Phil and Tiger started this idea i think ... They regularly go at pins that arent "getable"....and they get them! and the younger player has grown up watching this and they go for them too... Heck im one of those guys... Shortgames are all sharp now , and include Lob wedges and super Lobs and they just dont fear the short side anymore... It takes a lake or a dropoff into OB to make most of them think middle of the green anymore...

I agree completely with Blade; more guys are less "scared" to go get any pin because that's the mentality. I certainly know I'm more likely to throw shots at basically every pin because that's the golf I watched growing up and the way that I played once I started playing tournaments myself. There are very few times that I think "middle of the green, 2 putt" and the days that I am thinking like that, it's more to do with my ball striking or the fact that I'm playing to maintain a lead/qualification spot than anything else.

Better players. Better attitudes. Fiercer competition. Better athletes. Better technology. Better mental. Courses in perfect shape. All this equals better scores.

A 59 is great, but on the golf level of greatness .... I think a 59 has lost some of it's luster. Especially with it being achieved more so lately.

The first four minute mile was on 6 May 1954 at Oxford University's Iffley Road Track, by Roger Banniste. A second runner was two months later, during the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, B.C. with Australia's John Landy and Bannister, again.

Al Geiberger scored his 59 in 1977.

How many has there been since? And how many have repeated it?

I think the point is that once the 4 minute mile got beaten, then the rest 'knew' it could be done and then very quickly more and more beat 4 minutes, until it was 'normal' and expected. These runners didn't suddenly become better or faster over a short period of time, and that tells me that were fast enough before they dared to break sub 4. At least that is what my mind tells me what the history of the 4 minute mile was.

I'm not so sure that Al's 59 was the 4 minute mile equivalent - it was a freak occurrence and everyone knew it - it was 'impossible' and so they never believed they could do it. But now we have fellas who've invariably shot sub 60 rounds in practice/social rounds - hell, there's a local pro at my club who's had putts on the 18th to break 60, and he's no where near a tour of any sort. These fellas 'know' they can do it if they get the luck going their way.

So, I think there has perhaps been a shift in the mindset, very much like the breaking of the 4 minute mile.

was that the 100th time it has been done, no 8!! , it is still the bench mark, he had 13 birdies on a 7000+ golf course . I can't do it on a 5000yrd course . it's too early in the yr to say we have this game beat.

My point was that once it was done by Bannister other people did it very quickly and more importantly Bannister was able to repeat it.

Even allowing for the fact that running is not golf, as golf has far more variables in it there was a long gap between Al's 59 and the next.

More importantly only one person so far has been able to repeat it and in many cases the next round was significantly worse than the 59, so it is not even part of a winning round.

I think its comparing apples to oranges, but in any event once the four minute mile was broken there was quickly consistent improvement in performance and you can't say the same in golf.

I fully agree equipment and especially the ball are massive factors, but I reckon course set-up and conditions are huge when it comes to shooting 59 as opposed to low 60s. Not to offend anyone or start a war over which is better (that's not my intention), but there must be a reason its never been done over on the European Tour. Different weather each week, different green speeds each week, different grasses, different sand in bunkers from venue to venue etc. etc. Has to be something in the set-up IMHO.

I think that course conditions play a huge role and they have to get lucky with the weather. When the wind is not blowing these guys can flag hunt! I think the biggest factor is the guys that come up through the Web.com tour. The winning scores are very low. If you're not shooting at pins and making birdies you don't win and therefore don't get to play in the Big Show. The guys who come up through that tour aren't afraid to try to go low.

Like I said in a prior post, it's quickly becoming the 4 minute mile...

No. If it was, it'd be the norm for any competitor now. Remember when the 4 minutes was broken the first time, there was a deluge immediately after that of runners breaking that time. 60 was broken a long time ago and, is still quite a rarity IMO. Unless you count Kim Jong Il....

I'd probably liken it closer to a perfect game in baseball.
