3w or 4w wood recommendations?

250 tee ball 235-240 off the deck with my trusty second oldest club in my bag...the Taylor Made R11 4 17* with a Aldila RIP Beta 70S playing at 42”. Before her, I played a Vsteel 3 wood at 42.25” since it came out and wore the snot out of it...moved on really to join the “white” head movement and haven’t left it for this particular spot in the bag. Here is a list of woods that tried to dethrone it and failed:

-R11s 3

-R15 3

-Aero Burner TP 3 & 5 (loved the high piercing trajectory on this 5)

-M1 HL

-M2 HL (was too long off the tee)

-M4 HL & 5

-Mizzy JPX900 3 & 5

-Mizzy ST180 3 & 5

-Cally Steelhead XR 4 (was close very close)

-Cally Rogue 3 & 5 (3 is one of the best out of this bunch for off the deck distance)

Needless to say the 4 wood or any fairway is more to me about fitting a yardage between driver and my oldest club in the bag, which is my hybrid with steel shaft. The R11 just does it right out of the box with the stock settings and the TM graphics TP RIP Beta for my game. I say hit a lot of them and give them a few rounds with at least 5-6 buckets before you move on. You will notice flight, turf interaction, tee reaction, and most important all the subjective sound, feel, and looks of the club, to get you properly on your way. For me a little shorter shaft with some hot melt in the head was the ticket to find the right everything. Now I have a history of tremendous shots that I mentally call upon briefly and frequently when pulling her out of the bag and that breeds such a reliable confidence that’s worth so much IMHO. Good luck op.

Since you hit your hybrid well..... ever thought about getting a 3HL or 4w and cutting down the shaft and manipulating the swing weight to be closer to your hybrid and irons? Don't overlook your shaft selection too. My fairways are cut 1/2" short and swing weight closer to my irons.

I second this. I seriously struggle with longer fairway shafts off the deck. I have an old V steel 5wd that is 41” long and the thing is money. I don’t worry too much about the distance loss from a shorter shaft because I make much better contact. I’ll give up 10 yards for accuracy everyday.

Just got an M3 3wd and 5wd that I’ll be cutting down. I put the 42” 80g shaft for the 5wd in my 3wd and it was way easier for me. I plan on interchanging my DI with either the 3wd or 5wd depending on course and/or conditions.

My irons are +1/2” too and I’m generally a solid ball striker with my irons. My 4 iron has been my favorite club lately.

Another vote for the Rogue 4W. Love how it sits at address. You can see plenty of loft, and it goes and goes. Getting the right shaft is also key. I like kiyoshi purple or ad-di in it.

Did you purchase the 4w with one of the shaft you mentioned, or did you have it installed after the fact?

I am just starting to get along with a rogue four wood but feel like the stock shaft might be a little too much for me

Trialled with both and also the stock evenflow. I ordered with the Ad-Di 7x.

Try the Ping G SF Tec. Never hit a fairway off the deck higher than I did this one. Off the tee it can get too high and a bit hooky (that’s probably my driver swing creeping in which is a draw shape) if you don’t tee it as low as possible. It’s 16 degrees so between a 3 and 4 wood I guess. It sits a little closed but just turn it down a degree to 15 and it’s nice and square. It’s pretty low profile, hugs the ground, and is pretty big and round - all which inspire confidence off the deck for me but you may prefer a different look. Didn’t have too much issue with it going left off the deck personally but I also typically have a little cut with my longer club. I threw some lead tape out on the toe as it’s pretty light on swinghweight with the Alta (you can use a fair amount of tape) so maybe this counteracted the draw bias but I doubt it, probably just in my head. It’s insanely easy to elevate.

My Rogue 4 wood is fast becoming what I have been looking for in a fairway for quite some time. I have tried a few models through the last 4 or 5 years and keep going back to my 910. When centered the 910 is still solid, but hit a little high on the face and it balloons a good bit - but still goes straight. Hit low and it is really punishing, but I have hit many good shots with it. The high shot with the Rogue still really goes and the low on the face shot is miles better than with my 910.I am 260-275 with driver and this 4 wood is giving me 240 off the tee and is super straight. For the first time in many years when I get to a tight driving hole I know exactly what club I am hitting, and it will not leave me way back for my second shot either. I have been really impressed with it!

I'd go for a 4W. Finally made the switch this Fall and have nothing but good things to say. I've said this in other threads but for me, my 3W was relegated to towel holding for the most part. Solid from the tee, but lacking from the grass. Also, for the tracks I was playing, not enough opportunity to hit it as much as I would like to improve my confidence with it so it suffered.

I also recall one of the magazines having an article on this, basically stating that a 4W is better overall for most of us amateurs, taking into considering distance + accuracy metrics. Just from my experience I can say that the playability gains of the 4W will outstrip any distance losses from the 3W. (Unless you plan on playing a super low profile 3W (Orlimar, Tight Lies, etc.))

Been gaming a Cobra King LTD 4-5 Wood set to 17.5 degrees. The stock setup is a bit lower-launching if that's your thing
