Christmas for the family.....

Warrick

Recommended Posts

So, what did everyone hook the family up with Christmas this year?

Wife - North Face Ozone boots, Nike Free RN 2018, weighted blanket, trip to Palm Dessert (Feb).

Son - UA and Nike hoodies, new 2018 Free RN Shield, MH Soft shell pants, wool socks, Black Panther mask, and Infinity Gauntlet from Marvel Legend Series, some cash. We also got him a subscription for a year to CELTX script writing software (early gift), already wrote his first screenplay (123 pages). Pretty cool for being 13.

Step-daughter\boyfriend - Tempur cloud pillows - cash

Me (from me) - putter at Continental getting redo, some sweet new TNF Summit Series gear.

call me a Grinch but i despise how every holiday has turned into a retail holiday. i like the vacation idea. i like gifts that are surprises or something someone's always wanted but wouldn't buy for themselves. its fun to watch young kids open things from santa. but when it turns in to buying the specific thing someone wants on their list, it becomes nothing more than an exchange of money. you buy me these $50 boots and i'll buy you this $50 drill.

I can understand that. In a weird way our vacation is along the same lines. More about making memories than getting stuff. For example, my son was 6 last year and he still talks about our vacation. He couldn’t tell you where his coat is right now but he could tell you everything about roasting marshmallows on the beach, playing with kids from all over the world and, of course, the fact that Jamaica has the best chicken nuggets in the world, lol.

I was not intending to start a discussion about spending time with your family and the meaning of Christmas, was just bored and curious what people got for the family.

If you don't buy stuff, great.

I'm not completely soured on gifts and consumerism yet, but we're adopting the "if it isn't a heck yes it's a heck no" mentality. We already have a playroom that's underused and full of stuff the kids rarely touch and I swear my wife loves to go to Target, buy one thing she needs and 10 she doesn't, come home, take the one thing she needed out and just leave everything else in the bag untouched for weeks. I return things and she never notices. We're only getting things we know will be bona fide hits and avoiding unnecessary junk to make the tree look good. I took my boys out to look and they wanted to put tons of crap on their lists that I know they'll never use!!

So means upgraded ipad 6th generations for the 8 and 5 year old. I traded in a bunch of old electronics and once I trade in their mini 2s, I'll only be out of pocket like $100. Total score!!! I'm sick of listening to them complain of glitches and not being able to run some of the newest games. They're also getting Super Smash Bros and that's about it besides Santa gifts and stocking stuffers. My two year old will get like 3 small things and she'll be pumped. Family will contribute plenty of stuff too.

I'm pumped that all my kids still believe in Santa!! Even the 8 year old, I assume this is probably the last year. Every morning they look for Buddy the Elf and love the holiday. Bike for the 8 year old, Nerf gun for the 5 year old, and a Rocktopus for the 2 year old.

Thinking a nice pair of sunglasses for my wife. Kids will get her the usual coffee cup and probably a robe. We collectively got new floors, painted cabinets, and all new appliances this year so not going crazy at all.

Only family requirement for Christmas is no gift cards (a rule set by my wife with the birth of our daughter). Which is hilarious, because the only way to give my wife what she wants is a gift card.

What could go wrong...

No over-the-top stuff for anyone. Most of our five kids have young families, so gifts are more along "needs" than "wants".

Will visit our kids and grandkids in San Diego in January, post holiday. Planning to take our granddaughters horseback riding at Pony Land.

Being at The Farmers is a nice plus.

I’m offshore working and my wife is taking her daughter to NYC for Christmas since I won’t be there. I’m giving them cash to spend while they’re gone.

I tried telling my wife not to get me anything. I live by the philosophy of “we’re adults, we both work and make a decent living, if you want something, go buy it”. I’d rather just be home with them. She disagreed, so cash it is, lol.
