TM-92 Australian Blade Specs?

Bring this thread back to life because I just bought a set of TM-92s. Very nice looking clubs, with a compact head and little offset that I really like. I will try to get some pictures up later today. Anyway, a couple of interesting things:

1)The heads are pinned. That surprised me. Was this common with Maxfli (Dunlop?) irons of this period? All my other irons from the Eighties/Nineties period are all epoxy only, though I did have a set of Hogans from the mid-Eighties that were pinned. Anyway, the shafts are TT S300, so no need to swap them out.

2) The PW is the same length as the 9i. Anyone else with TM-92s find the same thing? I quite like the idea, and look forward to seeing how it plays.

One last question: the grips are really slick, but they have improved a little after I game them a good soapy brushing. However, a couple have some cracking (PW and 8i). While they're still playable, does anyone know of anything that would ameliorate the cracking a little?

I agree re the pins. My '88 Apex were pinned, but I believe the '90 Grinds and subsequent models were not. I have a much earlier set of Australian Blades which are not pinned, and in general I would guess that pinned hosels were a small minority of irons sold from at least 1980 onwards. But it's not a big deal either way. They're not hard to punch out if you need to reshaft - and in my experience, much less trouble than some unpinned old Wilsons.

I built some '50s Hogans with the 9 iron and wedges the same length - although the 9 iron in that case was 48* and a really useful club around the green.

Sorry, I can't help with the cracked grips. Normally, by the time the rubber is brittle enough to crack, the grips are shot. But I've had one set where the rubber did just what you describe - cracking whilst remaining soft and playable. These were a Tour Velvet style perforated design, and I suspect that the design had too many perforations and not enough rubber to hold together. I just carried on playing them - they felt no different really whilst swinging.

There are several rubber cleaner and conditioner products available and used by automotive detailers. Here in the States, they are readily available at any auto parts store. Cannot vouch for their effectiveness on grips, never used this type of product. Would be concerned that they may make the grip unduly slippery. Would certainly test before full application. I don't try and save old rubber grips like I do leathers. Typically with classic clubs, they come with those miserable Victory grips and I'm looking to replace them immediately. Regardless of condition.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

The grips on the PW and 8i are really borderline, but I'm going to give them a try. There is some cracking but it's not excessive; it's the slipperiness that's more concerning right now. I'll probably give them another scrub and then a light sanding.

Interesting about the pinning, isn't it. Seems like it was policy at Hogan to pin them, even though better epoxies made it unnecessary.

Thanks for the suggestion. There's an auto parts store very near me, so I'll see what they've got. And I will test before trying whatever I find right away on all my grips!

I'm won't be too bothered if I have to change the TM-92 grips because they're nothing particularly special, but they do have the Maxfli logo on.

I played the TM-92 blades for several years.

Loved 'em and still have a couple of sets.

NCN,

Congrats. I have same set w/ DG S300, flat out heaviest irons I have ever swung so I put them aside but my preference for heavy has gone way up since, May have to break them out. Can thank you for inspiration. :)

They are indeed heavy. I noticed that yesterday when I took them for a swing. Surprisingly so, considering they're small, compact head.

To restore rubber grips tackiness, use Bleche-wite. Everyone says the formulation is different now but I got good results using the Black Magic product on Lamkins and GP NDs and Tour Velvets. I think this method destroys Winn grips though, but what doesn't.

Directions here; I use a nail brush instead of a toothbrush. https://www.torontog...e-secret-method

That's useful advice, but the grips were really far gone, so I've decided to replace them. I tried hitting them at the range after I had cleaned them 3 times, but they were to slippery. Such nice irons, so I want to play them at their best.
