Seeking input on Mizuno MX/MP mixed set

draw1

Recommended Posts

So I just ordered a new matched/combo set of Mizunos...

4-6 Iron MX300 with Rifle 5.0 shafts

7-PW MP52 with Rifle 5.0 shafts

I am not sure if the different look of the club will bug me as the MX is satin while the MP is chrome. Also, I am not sure if the MX will make that much of a difference in the long irons from a forgiveness perspective.

I am an 18 index, but I strike the ball well - short game has issues as I am just getting back into golf after only playing once or twice per year for the past 14 years. Used to play a lot more before that - almost every weekend.

Has anybody else combined these two sets? I am wondering if I should just get the entire MX300 set or the MP52 set.

This winter I acquired a set of MX 300's with KBS Tour shafts. In the past I've played blades or players cb's, since I like the looks of a smaller head and little offset.

I've hit the MX 300's only a few times (snow) but I'm certain these will be my gamers this coming season. These irons set up well, and hide any game improvement features that they may have. These MX 300's are very solid all the way round.

Personally? I'd stick with one set or the other...But I'm playing the MX 300's this year.bb.gif

Good Luck!biggrin.gif . Here's a quick comparison of the MX 300 and the MP 32.

Both sets are nice but are the lofts are set up differently. I would go non mixed or you'll have to do some bending to get your distances right. I went with MX300 5-P with 2010 MP FLI-HI 3/4. I ultimately decided on MX300 for a little more forgiveness in midirons and the looks at address were comparable so it was an easy choice. The MP FLI HI's are great clubs too. very easy to hit.

I think on most Mizuno sets where there's an undercut cavity (mp52 and "up") it stops at the 7 iron - then the 8 9 and pw are more solid cavities - personally I would go with the full set of 300s. The short irons are plenty nice feeling and aren't exactly big huge shovels.

If the 300s had been out when I bought my 52s I'd have got them instead. The 300s are just such a good compromise and you could happily use them no matter how low hcp you get. They have all the feel plus a little extra help when it doesn't go so right, and they don't look all chinky and offset at address.

Either way I would get a full set of one.

I am playing with the idea of a mixed set of MX300's and 8-PW with MP68 but right now I am leaning back towards just going with the MX300's...

I seem to get much of the same playability (with my skill level) but more forgiveness with the MX's...but when you hit the 68's on the sweetspot the flight and feeling are very, very nice...

That's the attractiveness of the MP Series! I'm torn between the philosphy of optimizing the good feel/results of my good shots or minimizing the bad feel/results of my bad shots. I know the later will lead to better scores, but the former is what keeps me coming back for more punishment!

I think I have come to the conclusions that many of you have...I am definitely going to go with a full set of one or ther other. I am currently leaning towards the MX300, but I want to get back to the range one last time (if for nothing else than the free range balls they provide for the demobiggrin.gif ).

If I do go with MP, I may very well get a 4 hybrid. I am already going to get a 3 hybrid anyway. This is a whole nother demo session I need to do!

Did you test any other 3/4 hybrids. I will get getting at least a 3 if not a 4 also. The guy I'm dealing with at the golf store highly recommends the G15 3 hybrid. I will be demoing these next week.

Ironically I too just purchased a very similar mix. Though I decided to go 4&5-iron in the MX-300 and 6-PW MP-52. I still use a hybrid for my 3-iron. I simply hit the MX 4-iron more solid than the MP 4-iron and the 23-deg loft of the MX works well with my 20-deg Adams Idea Pro. Coming from a similar G-10/i-10 mix, I love the clean lines and superior feel of the Mizuno's. Besides, all last year I struggled with the huge offset in the G10.

Best of luck with your new setup!

This is why I can't come to a resolution on mixed or not, just when I think I have made a decision, somebody else comes along and has a different perspective! russian_roulette.gif

Have you had a chance to game them on the course yet? Did they wind up bending the MPs to match the MXs, vice-versa, or both?

As I don't really hit my 5 iron that much, part of me wonders that if I hit the 6 iron MP52 fine then maybe I should get 5-PW MP52 and a 3/4 hybrids. Part of the problem is that I have only been able to demo the 6 irons. There is a Mizuno fitting day in 1 week, which I might keep my order on hold pending the demo day so I can get a chance to hit some longer irons...but that means I don't get my clubs next week!

I ordered a mixed set with mp-52 8-pw and mx-300 4-7. Hit them all and were all great clubs, but I can't look at the short irons in the mx
and I can't be confident with a mp long iron. I did make sure all my shafts and lie angles were matched up with the mix. I ordered the
the mx one degree weak to compensate for more distance. Don't think I'll hit them too high. I'll let you know what I think when I get them.

Thx for your post! Please let me know how you like them once you have a chance to hit them. What shaft did you order?

Well...I went back to the range to demo the longer irons. Here is what I concluded:

5 Iron - Preferred the MP52 to the MX300. Not as heavy and felt better on contact. Great ball flight and better than the MX300 for me (and this was with the wrong shaft and not 2* upright, which I need).

4 Iron - Couldn't hit the MP52 well at all...could have been getting tired by then.

So, I am definitely getting the MP52 5-PW and am actually considering a 4 hybrid. I tested the Titleist 909H with the stock Diamana Blue Regular shaft (which I was told is more of a firm Regular) and REALLY liked it. The Ping I15 was my next choice. I hit a few others, but the Titleist really felt good and the ball flight was spectacular. I might still consider the 4 iron, but after hitting the Titleist, I am not sure I can see a good reason to do so!

So, no mixed set for me this time around. I am really excited about getting the new MP52s - man they feel good and they go even better!

Thx for everybody's input into this decision - I really appreciate it!clapping.gif
