What are your opportunity costs of time spent with golf?

I still get my work done, see my family and friends, have time for the ladies, get my pints of brown beer in, seen enough of the world for my tastes...

... it's a leisure activity. If a leisure activity has gotten in the way of 'foregone opportunities' then your priorities are out of whack.

Golf used to be worth it, then it wasn't and now it's getting to be worth it again. I lost a girl I wanted to marry because her dad was golf mad and she didn't want to end up like her mom, because she knew I loved the game too. She thought playing twice a week was too much and she left. So golf sucked for a long time. But now I'm back at it seriously again, and I sacrifice stuff now to play, and I have it great, so definitely worth it in the long run!
Dude, this sucks, and I can relate-

I had a girl walk out on me for basically the same reason, because she was convinced that the four swats that I played in weekly in addition to the other 36-54 holes that I played was a way to avoid her and our relationship.

And the kick in the nuts?

Her father was a golf pro-

As was she...

And she would get home later than I.

I had issues, though golf wasn't one of them

Well, I'm glad that you're back on the horse!!

Keep the faith and keep swingin Bro!

Thanks Richard and Jon H.

It sucked bad for a long time. I played some rounds socially with a friend who is now a collegiate golfer in Georgia somewhere, and I caddied for her. My lady at the time thought I was spending time with this other girl in the bedroom, not the course. Clearly not the right girl for me!

You know...for me...golf...whether it's at the range or playing 9/18 holes is time that I get to just disconnect for everything outside of the game. All the stresses...all the drama...nearly everything...it's something of my peace and serenity (even when I played like crap and wasn't super happy). It's maybe the only where I feel like I'm in complete control of my outcome...good or bad...even with the unexpected bad bounces...I ultimately control what I do with the ball.

What have I given up...a lot of time, money...and my ex-wife would even go so far as to say our marriage, but truthfully, our marriage was a mess with or without golf in my life.

As far as time and money...I figure that something else would fill in the space if golf wasn't there...and I honestly can't think of what I'd rather be doing.

If I didnt have golf - I'd probably be engulfed into illegal seedy 8mm-type snuff films or be one of those creepy-grown-men My Little Pony worshipping Bronies (google it and thank me later).

So yes, it's totally worth it.

Bro, obviously I can deal with the Bro part-

LMAO, please talk to me about the pony?!

And the plural leads me to ask, how many Bronies are out there?

And hold off on that feeling of normalcy, LMAO

I gotta feeling that that's sorta like two wrongs equaling a right, LMAO :)

Worth it. You'll discover more about a person's character in 18 holes of golf than you would ever discover in a lifetime of conversation. Even if that person is yourself. I love this game.
Truer words were never spoken. If you want to see what a persons true nature is just play a round of golf with him. Nothing puts a persons true character on display like a round of golf. If your playing partner can walk up on the first tee with a smile and maintain it through a tough round of golf and still be smiling at the end, this is the guy I want to hang around with.
I have met some of the most untrustworthy, dispicable people on the golf course that played the game with a smile on their face and and adhered to the rules. I have also met some of the most sincere, caring and admirable people that have used a foot wedge, slammed a club, or use a four letter expletive to describe one of their shots. Golf is a game/sport with rules (all of which I adhere to, with dresscode). But to make it some oracle-buddha-soul seeing entity is a little much.
After giving your post some thought I believe you might be right and I was wrong. You say you play by the rules and don't loose your temper and I certainly wouldn't want to play golf or hang out with you so I stand corrected.

My point was is that how someone behaves on a golf course isn't always indicative of how someone acts off the course. I've played golf with business contacts who are all abiding to rules, play with a smile on their face, give compliments, pull the pin, etc etc and off the course are some of the most ruthless and conniving people in the business world. Golf isn't always a true test of character. Sure there might be parallels, but it isn't always the case. Likewise, I've played with guys that are lax with rules (maybe because they don't take the game as serious) and have the upmost gentlemen qualities in the world. But you are right, there are plenty of guys that play by the golf rules that I wouldn't want to have a beer with afterwards, so maybe we are onto something.
I happen to agree with your statement regarding spending 4-5 hours on a course with someone and getting a pretty good read on them, though obviously there are exceptions. I will say that I nixed three business deals based off of my 4-5 hours spent on the course with the other individual, and in one case, he was terminated 3 years ago due to a major front page scandal that not only destroyed his career as CEO of the largest health insurance company in PA & one of the ten largest in the US, but also his marriage and the marriage of the woman involved. And we had a great round. It was afterwards and his behavior on the porch. At the time he was the CEO. Another individual, owning his own multi-million dollar company, just got sentenced for accepting bribes from a city official for getting government business. I'll just say that words and actions told me all that I needed to know. I'm pretty accurate in my ability to analyze people. I've made my living off of that ability for the past 30 years.

I, myself, like using the course/round as a barometer. And no one's perfect, me far from it. And I'm just as weary of the patronizing individual, who's super polite, as Somaplr describes, because, well, no one's that damn nice or good, LMAO, at least no one that I want to hang with, lol.

However, one thing that I'd say, and I'm just basing it off of seeing both of your posts, and that is that Somaplr would be great to play with, and the 19th hole would be even better, and you'd be a lot of fun to play with and have a few pops with.

I think sometimes in this medium, words don't come across as intended, and people take literally and in a defensive manner, when many times, the writer doesn't mean that.

I have a strong feeling that you two would enjoy each other's company.

And me?

Hell, I'm easy, and I haven't been on a course in 15 months so I'll play with just about anyone, LMAO :)

Have a great season

It's not just golf, it's spending time with people close to my heart in a beautiful setting.
This, most of my golf these days on the course is spent with good friends or my Dad. In fact I don't see my Dad as much these days as I would like to so this always become an opportunity gained. When I go practice I often bring my son with me so that's another chance to spend more time with him. The days I go and play alone..well I probably am going because I have nothing else going on at that particular time. If it's a hobby and you enjoy it, then you shouldn't be losing out on anything in life by playing the game.
