$3.96 Black Putter Shaft

Recommended Posts

If my grip shows up in the mail today I may be doing this tonight. So, for those of you who have done this, with the exception of one post I read, most are applying the tubing the full length of the shaft right? Grip over the top of the rubber tubing. It doesn't slip/torque since the tape is not on the steel right? I don't mind putting the rubber up to the bottom inside of the grip I just don't want to feel the step from rubber to steel. I can feel it when it isn't taped right (why I do it myself) so I'm more inclined to tube all the way up the shaft. Thanks for any last min input.
the only one i have done, i went about 1" into where the grip would be. Not sure about all the way, with slipping. BTW, a heat gun is the way to go, not a blow dryer, it will take twice as long i have found.
Thanks can you feel the step from rubber to steel underneath the grip? +1 on the heat gun I have one.

Yeah, I just went up maybe 1/2" into the grip. I can't feel a thing, I'd be amazed if you could, especially on a putter.

You could go up the entire length of the grip, but as you mentioned, it's a friction only connection between the steel and the black sleeve, so even when you slip the grip on it's possible the black sleeve could move.

Option 3: after the grip is installed, carefully cut the sleeve exactly where it meets the grip. (or even 1/16" inside)

I'd first try the install at half an inch...

note: I also did my two greenside wedges with this stuff, just about an inch into the grips, no issues at all.

Good Luck.

Was thinking if I did it this way I'd put a single layer of electric tape to keep solvent from getting between the tubing and the steel. I'm probably just paranoid about feeling any seams. In a regular club grip of their is a vertical seam in the tape under a standard sized grip, I don't like it because I can feel it. In sure with putter grips that are mid sized or larger you can't notice. The one I have coming is a mid size salty.
Mine is done all the way to the top of the shaft, zero issues.

I did a test piece before I did the whole thing, the tubing is stuck on pretty damn tight I wouldn't worry about slippage on a putter.
Grip is in. Did you have any difficulty sliding the grip on? Salty puts a note on saying that the cork is very soft until it is installed. Don't want to have to force anything and end up breaking the grip. That'd be tragic and anger inducing.

Edit: not going to matter, going to do the 1/2" past the grip method, tks
remember the tubing will shrink so don't initially cut it to length. one of the first ones I cut it to length and then when I heated it up, it shrank and I was way short under the grip and had to start over. hahahaahaha.
Good call. Thanks.

I've done this to quite a few of my clubs. I can offer some info.

Pictured is a Scotty Newport 2.6 CS with black wrap. I cut the wrap and exposed the steel shaft 6" up the hosel. It creates a SeeMore like visual standing over the ball. The wrap easily cuts off with a box cutter or knife. Just be careful to not cut into the steel.

Make sure you order 5/8" diameter shrink wrap. Anything smaller won't fit over the butt end. I've tried smaller diamter wrap on the bottom of the shaft. I've put green or red 1/2" wrap halfway up the shaft just as a flair. To do this, you have to remove the head. With epoxy, it's easy to do with most plumber neck putters.

I've also put the wrap on my wedges. In the picture, you can see my 58* vokey SM5 black oxide with a full black wrap and red Pure grip. I installed the grip without grip tape and cut the wrap at roughly the grip end point. There is slight overlap. I have had issues with the air pressure creating a wrinkle between the wrap and steel when I put the grip over the wrap. Guys who grip the traditional way would not have this issue, since it just comes from the intense air pressure. I really like the wraps on my wedges. It gives them a sleek look and aggressive feel with a little bit of individuality i guess.

For comparison sake, it's a Vokey SM5 with a full black wrap and red grip, a basic non wrapped Ping 1-A (newest classic edition to my collection) and the Scotty Newport 2.6 with the SeeMore like black/steel wrap.

This took me longer than expected but was well worth it. Due to the no-hosel design the first time I put the wrap on, part of the wrap slid over the rubber grommet, part didn't. I tried to trim and it didn't look good to me so I cut off the wrap and did again. The second time I just shrunk the bottom of the wrap to the shaft so steel was showing, slid it down to the grommet and continued to work my way up. Worked great. I wasn't anticipating the Salty Grip to be so loose on dry fit. The directions said the inside bore was .61" and I needed .60" tape build up. That took some more time than a usual grip job but in the end worked great. I do have to say after cutting the wrap off from the first time - it is tough, I can see why people say it is durable. I like the look and feel so much I'm going to do it to my Yes! Evelyn with its pvd black finish. Should look fantastic. Thanks to all for your input. I'll post a video of the shrink tubing going on tomorrow.

Thanks now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think there needs to be any trimming at all. All one needs to do is ensure you're beginning with a square 90* cut at the end of the tubing to start with and then heat the bottom inch to the shaft an 1/8" to the hosel, push the tubing flush to the hosel so no steel is showing, finish the shrink wrap. As I worked my way up I was careful to keep checking, in case the shrink wrap contracts off the hosel (in my case the grommet) - it didn't.. I think the step of trimming can be eliminated all together.

::wait:: er, never mind!

Looks terrific. I've had three clubs done that way for a few months now, I'm no gentle handler, so I can attest, the durability is terrific.

BTW, I really like the look of that grip!
Thanks it's called a Salty Grip. Cool product. It's definitely different in feel, non tapered and lighter. I will reserve judgement on it until I hit over 500 putts or so with it (I keep track with my skypro). I haven't really used the putter yet. I set the grip and let it dry overnight.

FWIW, I used an Aldila Value Series graphite 8 iron shaft with a Super Stroke 1.0. I like the way it looks but I put a cheap head on it so it's not a fair assesment of how the putter actually rolls. The black graphite looks really cool with the super stroke.

I also have a few of these shafts laying around so last night I bought some white appliance paint and prepped and painted one of these shafts. I'm going to wet sand and do a few more coats on it then install it in another putter I have laying around. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Did my odessey metal x9 almost a year ago ( pics on page 3 ) and it's held up great. Did another tonight. I really like older tp mills putters. I've had some great rounds with this tpm 3 . Since head was black with white paint fill and I got a extra black & white ss 3.0 laying around , wrapping the shaft should look good. May see some greens this year if the current gamer acts up ... At 32" and new grip it feels great .

Ya there GI irons ... but I keep em clean .
How much shrinkage should I allow for when measuring?
Measure an inch past the bottom of grip. I think I remember reading from the guy that started this thread, he was too exact and had to start over. I personally think the shrinkage is minimal. Can't hurt to go two inches, the grip slides right over it.

So this is ridiculously easy for anyone interested. And looks great. Heat gun is the only way to go. Took 5 minutes. Feels very durable. Just waiting on my grip to come in to finish it up. Thanks for the thread. Cheap too!

Ordered new shrink wrap to do my Nome. Not sure how easy it will be with the double bend shaft and the fact that the shaft goes straight into the head.

Any thoughts or tips?

Go back a page or two and read my tips on my double bend experience. Advice, don't sweat it, it's easy. No trimming necessary. Start with a good clean square cut for the end closest to the putter head.
