$3.96 Black Putter Shaft

Has anyone tried this with gray shrink wrap? I have a few satin heads that I like but I am kind of OCD about going from black to satin

He's going to thoroughly test the durability over the winter for me.

That's one of the things I love about this site. 10 minutes ago, I had no intentions of ever blacking out my putter shaft. Now I have 8 feet of shrink tubing on its way.....

Quick update on the Ketch I did this to a little while back. It's probably been a few months now I suppose and the shrink wrap is holding up splendidly. No chips, stretches, gouges, nada. A few marks on it from other grips (my assumption) but I could probably just rub them off if I wanted to. Thing still looks great. Durability is quite surprising, I'm impressed.

Quite wipe with a rag with a bit of turps/white spirit on it gets rid of all marks and brings the black up as new again.

This may be a nice option once I start tinkering with my putter this winter. Always missed the black shaft I had in the original versa line.

I love this idea on black putter heads. I may be having one of mine refinished this winter. If I do, I am going to have them hold off on the grip so I can take a shot at this.

It is no where near as durable as this method.

I covered my putter with clear shrink wrap just for kicks =p

I saw the shops carry these colours, yellow, red, blue, green, white, brown, orange, clear and of course, black.

It was mainly to preserve the shaft bands and i originally wanted to use clear tape. But cleartape is just another sticker like the shaft bands and eventually it too will fray like the shaft bands. After seeing this topic i went out and bought some clear heat shrink and installed it.

The whole thing turned out pretty ok.

Clear heat shrink is thicker than normal heatshrink. It becomes something like a rubber hose over the steel shaft. I am sure it changed the swing weight of the putter.

I noticed that the thickness of the heatshrink is as thick as the 2 layers of lead tape i applied up on the butt of my putter shaft. The lead tape is 1/128" per wrap so 2 layers would mean 1/64" thick.

I didn't have to use any build up tape to make the whole thing flush with the lead tape which was something of a bonus.

-Buy the 5/8" heat shrink from eBay. (I bought an 8ft section but I've seen 3ft, 5ft & 8ft sections)

-measure how much you need. (I needed 23" to cover the shaft and allow 1/2" extra to stay under the grip. My putter is 35" total length)

-Either remove the grip(easiest) or the putter head(harder)

-slide the heat shrink over the shaft

-heat the heat shrink (heat gun works best) until it's tight around the shaft.

-reinstall grip or putter head

-trim any excess heat shrink to your liking.

The heat shrink does not discriminate by brand. Anything that fits with it will work. I bought 5/8" diameter shrink wrap.

LOL I see you use the same putter grip I was using and have for years. Good grip even though I went to a older Lamkin 2 Gen on the Santa Fe and a original Ping Man on the Newport. But on most of my putters I have that grip because I bought a buttload of them on sale one time for $1 each

Well seriously it is not my cup of tea so to speak but if you wanted to try it I suggest maybe going to a thrift store and buy a couple of cheap putters for a few bucks and go from there and see

It's not permanent. You can cut it off easily if you don't like it or decide to sell.
