Has anyone hit the honma tour world irons?

Honman

Recommended Posts

A long time ago i used to play the 925 tour athelete blades by honma which to this day are still about the most forgiving blades I've played. I saw the Tw717 m and v at the PGA show and they were just about the best looking irons on display has anyone got any feedback on them? I know in the uk these can be custom built by select club builders.

I also hit the 430, 455 and the fairway wood and was really impressed. If it wasn't for the price I think these would be pretty popular among better golfers.

honma equipment is quite popular in my country as the local distributor has been here since the 70s and has quite a loyal following..

top notch stuff but very very pricey!!

it's also geared for asians(grips and shaft flexes)--at least the ones locally available..

have the 717m. great clubs, small compact head, top line which has a soft rounded grind makes it look a good half mil thinner than it measures... very thin look, has just about the least offset of any blade today if not right at the least, toe isnt sharp but not blunted either. had an ex tour pro hit em & he did a double take on looking at the head & said three time 'damn, these feel nice'... lol, now that was an endorsement.

What clubs do they feel like? What's the forgiveness like, they don't look to have too much but they are stunning heads. Am thinking the v with maybe the m in the 9 and w.

Me :)
The Honma ( 717 V) is a fine iron , but expensive .

They are simple and elegant clubs .

I like the Honma for the soft feel and feedback , and they are a lot easier to play then some would have you think .

Please forgive me for my broken english ( american )

Thanks for the input, exactly what I needed, as I was wary on the levels of forgiveness in them.

BTW your english is very good, and I wouldn't have known that it wasn't your first language if you hadn't brought it up.

had an old set of mp29's for a long, long while... so compared to them, the 717m feels more dense/heavy, not quite the marshmallow softness of the mizzy's when center struck. however, it isnt clicky at all, which is what i felt w the miura's. feel is so subjective though. from the website, thesr have the honma finish, which if i read it correctly, includes an underlay of copper to the nickel plate.

as for playability, this season will be my first, though had a tester 4iron for all of last season... just fine. plays like a blade, hadnt noticed it being any more difficult to hit than the mizzy's, which arenr hard to hit to begin. it sets up better to my eye than most, so in my minds eye, they look perfect to hit at address... and having no mental blocks is a major plus for playing them. they hit great, imo.

Exactly the feedback I was after. I don't suppose you tested the V as well? I'm guessing not as you sound like a blade player through and through!

no worries honman... happy to offer some feedback & contribute back a little... had gleaned so very much from these forums the last year.

sorry but no on the v's, just the m's. as a side note, these spec out very close to the previous beres pro model. it is my belief, without ever having seen them however, that the beres head will be closer in size & offset yet w the cavity head. i'd double check that, but it might be worthwhile to check them out... a clean cavity head.

but these play just fine... i can hit 1/2" out to the toe, or a line or two low/high, and still get very playable shots. anything bad originates w my swing, certainly not these clubs. they set up as clean & neutral as you can get... no artificial corrections built into the head. if the ball moves oddly, then you know where it originates & what to work on. they hit w a thump when dead center & properly released :-))

just saw the miura mb001 in person though no hitting... those look really clean as well... for another blade option. i like its topline & head size. she's a beuat.

i'd check out the epon sus for another cavity head w a clean look... just to add to the mix.

happy hunting!

I'm not that worried about my clubs being jdm, I've just seen these and fallen in love however I'm also really keen on s55 so go figure. I've found it all comes down to how the club is built more than it being jdm, bust I've got a soft spot for honma and these look like great irons. I've played ping i20s this year and they are great irons, I just can't deal with the offset.

Going to hunt for a set of Japanese forged irons in Tokyo. I heard that Festival Golf have some good deals on used clubs.

I am a 10 handicap.

Do you guys think the Honma Tour World TW717 V will suit me? They come standard with the Nippon Modus 3. Will probably look at the 111g regular version.

The blades would be too much club for me. I don't like the strong lofts of the TW717P... 43 deg for a PW or (10 iron) is crazy.

How would Honma TW717 forged irons compare with Miura, Epon etc...?

They're really nice irons.

I've not hit them so I'm only going on appearance, however I'd say they would be a little harder to hit, and probably lower wLaunching with a bit more spin. They are a lot more compact than the jpx.

  • 10 years later...

I play the TW 717p irons, stiff flex np tour shafts. I’ve used these for one full season and have never hit a more solid iron. The metal they are made from is top quality and faces hardly have a scratch. They feel like butter when hit on the sweet spot. They are one club longer than my Wilson Staff forged Staff Model irons were and much more forgiving. I’m able to work the ball either direction and spin the shorter irons at will. These are high quality clubs and the craftsmanship is obvious. They are pricy, but worth every penny. I’m an 8 handicap and 65 years old.
