St. George golf trip with wife

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, thinking about taking my wife on a long weekend golf trip and really want to go to St. George. Seems like a great place and not nearly as expensive as some other destinations which is a huge plus since I'll be paying for 2.

I was looking at Sand Hollow and Coral Canyon for sure...also thinking of Entrada, Sunbrook, Sky Mountain and Wolf Creek.

Some questions....

How close together are those courses? Can I stay in one centrally located hotel?

Are there any good hotels with nice pools?

How unbearable is the weather in June? I see the rates go way down over the summer, obviously because of the heat. But, I don't mind the heat myself especially if is a dry desert heat.

I noticed that some of the courses have resorts. Are those worth staying at? Which one is the best?

Sand Hollow is probably the best public course in the state of Utah. Sand Hollow has the Championship 18 and a 9 hole Links course which is very unique. Some people love it and some people don't. Coral Canyon is probably a notch below Sand Hollow, but is very high quality due to the layout and playability. I have never played with anybody that does not adore Coral Canyon.

Sunbrook, for years, was the crown jewel of St. George. They have 27 holes. I like CC a smidgen better than Sunbrook, but not by much.

The June weather should be just fine, but prep for some heat. Early June would be more bearable.

Now, Wolf Creek is south of St. George about 45 minutes in Mesquite. Mesquite is north of Vegas by about an hour or so. Mesquite is usually warmer than St. George and it could get toasty on you, but still very playable.

St. George has a ton of your standard run of the mill hotels. I have never stayed at any of the resort lodgings. SH and CC are north of St. George, about 15 minutes or so. SB is basically in St. George.

Entrada is quite the course, but it is private, if I am not mistaken.

Where are you flying into? Vegas?

If it were me, I would play SH, CC, SB, WC.

Thanks! I assume we are flying into Vegas. is there a closer option?

I thought Entrada was open to the public, or is that only if you are staying there? I'd like to stay at Entrada cause it looks really nice...I wonder if we can stay there, but only play Entrada one time.

Is Wolf Creek worth the 45 minute drive as opposed to playing Sunbrook?

You may be correct about Entrada in terms of playing it if you stay there. It would be a great place to stay for the trip, no doubt. Yes, Wolf Creek is certainly worth the drive. It is visually one of the most amazing courses you will ever see. Unique beyond description. If you fly into Vegas, Mesquite(Wolf Creek) is between Vegas and St. George so you can hit WC on either side of the trip.

You can actually fly into St. George, but it might be pricey.

I took a buddies trip to St. George last September. I reserved our rooms and golf on Redrockgolf.com which was a very easy process. We played at Sand Hollow, Coral Canyon, and the Ledges. Sand Hollow was our favorite of the three. There are amazing views on almost every hole. We really enjoyed the Links course there as well. It would be a great warm up for the main course there. Coral Canyon is not far behind Sand Hollow as far as vistas and the quality of the course. The front nine of the Ledges is pretty flat, and open links style golf. The back nine is more desert/mountain golf with some of most spectacular scenery of the trip. It was in great condition when we played there. I would play any of these courses again in a heart beat.

We stayed at LaQuinta. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and no more than fifteen minutes from the three places we played. They have a outdoor pool and hot tub which were very clean and well taken care of also. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We flew into Vegas which is a hour and fifteen to hour and a half drive to St. George. Make this drive during day light if possible. The last 20 to 30 minutes through the canyon are spectacular.

For scenery, quality of golf, and value it hard to beat St. George. My buddies and I are hoping to go again next year.

There a few hotels in St. George. Used to manage a hilton there many years ago, not sure what it is now. There is a Fairfield Inn in town or you can stay in Mesquite thats only 20 minutes away. Entrada used to be open to the public and is an awesome course with the lava rock and some elevated tee boxes, by far was my favorite to play when I lived there. Sunbrook was my second favorite and is very nice course as well.

Have fun, there is also the canyons to see that are lose by too.

You can play at Entrada if you stay. Very good track and very plush accommodations. Restaurant was also very good. It certainly was country club ish. I went with a buddy for a week of golf, but Entrada was the one place in the area that I know my wife would have enjoyed.

I stayed at Entrada with my wife and daughters in a villa that backed onto a creek / golf course .. WAS AWESOME. Great romantic rooms and locations. Great pool area

Course was solid as well. Three holes thru a lava field

My wife had us stay there due to it being the location of shooting High School Musical 2, and when my girls were younger, this was HUGE for them

Entrada looks really nice. Are you allowed to stay there for a few days even if you only plan on playing the course once? Was hoping to make that our base, but also want to play the other courses in the area like Sand Hollow.

I have played Sand Hollow, Entrada, Coyote Springs, Coral Canyon and Wolf Creek. All are great courses.

If you want a visual course Wolf Creek is well worth it. Honestly it is in my top 10 list I would say. Just something about the visual aspect, routing is decent also. One or two holes (#2 for sure) that if you play on some of the back tees your not sure where to hit your tee shot.

Coyote Springs. Nicklaus courses and very nice. Like all Jack courses you miss the green wrong and it will run off 20-30 yards...! If you fly into Vegas it is on the way to Mesquite but of the highway a bit west (15-20 mins)

In St George I would agree Entrada and Sand Hollow are both great courses and best options. I thought Coral Canyon was decent but was wow'd by it.

The family and I go to Mesquite every couple of years (6.5 hour dive) I play a few rounds, wife and daughter hang at the pool so works well. One night down to Vegas normally but wife is not a huge fan of Vegas.

Would you stay in St George or do you think its better to stay at Eureka Casino resport in Mesquite? It sounds like its about a 45 minute drive between the two so we'd still be able to play all the St George courses either way.

IMHO If you stay in Mesquite the Casablanca Casino is better. Problem is to book a time at Wolf Creek, Eureka Casino owners also own Wolf Creek. I have done the drive as noting in the above post and if you do not mind the 40/45min drive you could stay in Mesquite. I will say that St George is a WAY nicer town than Mesquite.

There are rentals at both Entrada and Sand Hollow. If you want to play Entrada you have to stay there at least one night. I am in the minority here but I don't really care for Coral Canyon. I think that Sand Hollow is a must as well as Entrada, if you're planning on renting there. If your staying only in Saint George I would also look at the Ledges and then either Coral or Sun Brooke. If your going to Mesquite, Wolf Creek if only for the experience, and then I like Conestoga. Coyote Springs can easily be played either to or from the airport in Vegas. The courses in St. George are not super close together. But it's not a very large area so nothing is too far apart. Everything in Mesquite is close. I live in the area and play the courses fairly often, I think you will enjoy yourself.

The only poker room in town is at the Eureka, if that matters to you. I actually like the Eureka hotel better because it's not attached to the casino. You can bmake it from mesquite to st. George in 30 min if you drive fast, remember that you will change from Pacific to Mtn time zone.
