Shaft Weight

Ok, I have a question about shaft weight for a driver. After talking to my local pro and a Nike rep, we agreed on a Kuro Kage Black HBP, extra stiff. How ever my club pro suggested a 60 or 70 gram shaft. My question is, with an average ss of 113, what weight would be the right choice? Does it make a difference?

Heavier shafts have a nicer influence on tempo, but how the heavier club feels depends a great deal on the shaft profile. The question is how do you feel about heavier shaft in driver? I am a bit older, but played heavier shafts for most of my golf over the last 20yrs+. I suspect your club pro might base his sharing on bias, or what he probably hears from members; they get pooped swinging heavy clubs.

What weight shaft have you been using in the past in your driver? And how does it feel to you?

The only way to really know what the best weight is for you is to try out the different options. But if you've been happy with the weight you've been playing, that would be the best place to start.

It also could be that he thought the tempo might be a little quicker than it should be or maybe just a bit inconsistent and though the heavier shaft might help with those things.

Hi good question. From my perspective it is probably a case not only on tempo but also transition. Rule of thumb is that the more severe transition, the higher weight shaft needed. 113 is some good speed so X flex is the standard fitting baseline. I would look at several shafts in different weights and look at launch angle and dispersion. Other factor should be if you are looking to move it left to right or visa versa.

Thanks for the input guys. I've been playing a 50 gram shaft and it feels light to me. Almost like I'm going to break it at some point. I like the idea of a stiffer and heavier shaft. I currently have a slice issue that im hoping a stiffer shaft will help too. I am planning a trip to my closest Golf Smith to go through a few shafts and see what I like best

If it feels too light, that's a pretty good indication that it probably is. In fact, for some people, feel can be much more important than any other aspect of selecting a shaft. If it feels 'wrong' in any way, that can effect both confidence and therefore the quality of the swing.

If you just want to experiment with a heavier shaft try running some lead tape around the shaft just below the grip. You can also run it down the backside of the shaft, just below the grip.

heavier shaft or rather smaller torque in it did cure my slice to a very significant degree.

re: Heavier shafts..I guess it depends on a person's size and strength.
I have just started trying out the PX 95 7.0 with Hogan Apex heads (Pinseeker S shafts previously..but bent the hozels on 6,7, 8 and 9..never hit the other irons, bar the SandWedge.)

It does seem to change tempo,..but for the better ..well in my case that is, which is a good thing, prevents to a degree over acceleration of shoulders vs hips.

I also upgraded my woods (from H&B Powerbilt Citations,persimmon, (bought 35 years ago when 13 yrs old) , about 4 months ago (I took a 30 year break from Golf).
I now use Diamana 72 S flex and in my case it works very well. (but I am 6"2 and 240..30 years in gymns).

The heavier shafts do seem to cure a lot of horrible nasty things in the backswing, particularly speed and direction change, hence less slice and less hook. (Gives chance for hips to get going before shoulders)...which in my case means less effort and Less "pooped".

I agree with the above, ..if it feels too light, there will be cons, though guess same is true of it being too heavy. Think of throwing stones..too light and takes effort,..too heavy , again a lot of effort.

I reckon a lot of the advice above is pertinent,...get what feels right for Yourself, ..maybe with the aid of your pro. Take time and get fitted correctly for yourself.
