For those with raw black SM5's

I'm looking at replacing my wedges to fix a large gap and well, it's about that time. I typically like the Titleist wedges that rust and love my current spin milled vokeys. I have read that the raw black finish is the only SM5 that will rust and I guess my question is what does the raw black look like with rust? If it goes from deep black, which I find hard to see the grooves, to bright silver where you strike the ball I will not like that. I think the gold nickel finish looks pretty sweet too so it's between those two. Pictures are very welcome, since I can't really find any pics of used raw black SM5's.

The raw blk sm5 is a QPQ finish. It is only going to rust on the sole and groves. I doubt anyone has had there's rust yet. The black will fade to a grey. This one was scrubbed with 000 steel wool before paint. The QPQ is pretty tough unlike oil can[attachment=2192485:ImageUploadedByGolfWRX Mobile1398444226.815800.jpg]

I would beg to differ. The QPQ finish was not hard to take off at all. Left Naval Jelly on mine for 5 minutes and the finish was removed.

Thanks guys. I want a 50.08 F, 56.10 S bent to 55, and a 60.04 L. I want the 50 in silver and other two in raw black. Now I gotta figure out what personalization options I want. That should be the fun part.

Yea the F grind is highly underrated. Playing my 54 with that grind and it has blown me away so far...

Same. First Naval Jelly treatment left it a little blotchy. A second finished the job nicely.

That looks really good! Can you explain what process you used and what products because I used Naval Jelly and it was kind of botchy like someone mentioned. Will post pictures in a minute.

Got rid of these because I need different grinds. Will probably be ordering again sometime next week and would like all of them to look like norcalgolf's.

I used white vinegar and 00, 000 steel wool pads. Navel jelly will work, probably better. It just needs to be scrubbed. The 3M 00 and 000 pads work best. Scrub the head while submerged. Highly recommend pulling the head!

So if using Naval Jelly, you recommend scrubbing the wedge with wool pads while the Naval Jelly is on the wedge?

How long did it take you to take off the finish using white vinegar and wool pads?

I fully submerged the head for about 30 minutes in white vinegar. Took another 3 to 5 minutes with the wool pads still fully submerged. I haven't tried the navel jelly, but it should work faster since it has phosphoric acid in it

Mine looked like this after the first pass with Naval Jelly but after a second pass they looked much nearer - but not as good as - Norcalgolf's effort.

 

I started this endeavor after my Oil Can SM4 lost most of its finish naturally. The SM4 has developed a nice even lightly rusted patina after a few weeks but the Raw Black SM5 has not turned at all.

 

I may completely strip them again and apply a custom paint fill after seeing Norcal's very fine work.
