For those with raw black SM5's

Got rid of these because I need different grinds. Will probably be ordering again sometime next week and would like all of them to look like norcalgolf's.

 

 

 

 

Mine looked like this after the first pass with Naval Jelly but after a second pass they looked much nearer - but not as good as - Norcalgolf's effort.

 

I started this endeavor after my Oil Can SM4 lost most of its finish naturally. The SM4 has already gotten developed a nice even lightly rusted patina after a few weeks but the Raw Black SM5 has not turned at all.

 

I may completely strip them again and apply a custom paint fill after seeing Norcal's very fine work.

 

Yeah those pictures were actually taken after I applied Naval Jelly twice. I am going to try Norcal's method the next time.

So does the vinegar or naval jelly soak remove the paint fill as well as the finish?

Or did you paint over?

BTW demo'd extensively today a chrome 56f and loved it open/closed/ whatever. It just worked effortlessly.

Really wanted to try a 54f and 58k but they did not have either.

Can't imagine chrome feels any diff than raw black.

It does not remove the paint. I use a paint stripper for that. It removes all the paint very quickly.

Norcal, did you use pure white vinegar or distalled white vinegar? I'm trying to get my finish as light as yours. Mine finish is just too dark of grey.

I was using 00 steel wool pads. I think I have some of the ones in the photo but never used them. I'll try and post pictures when I do a take two tonight probably.

To remove the blotchy spots, you want to use CLR with the scotch brite/steel wool pads. This will result in an even finish. Here's what mine look like:

Finally got mine done. The 3M Stripping pad worked wonders. Just a little scratched up but I am fine with it. Going to go over it one more time when my other SM5 wedges show up. Here are a few pics.

Do they rust faster after the finish is removed? I'm glad someone mentioned CLR. This is the method I plan on using for my wedges.

Yes they will. I would suggest using Naval Jelly to strip the finish and then CLR with a 3M stripping pad.

I removed the finish about a month ago and there is some oxidation forming. No rust but the cavity of the wedge is getting darker. The face gets cleaned after each round and still looks freshly stripped. This is my first go round with raw wedges and thus far no complaints,

Today was my fitting. Should have mine in a week hopefully. That black is REALLY dark, may have to do this sooner than later.

Question though on waiting a bit. There's no advantage to soaking/buffing them right away correct? I may try the black for a while and then strip.

@ Sidetracked - those wedges turned out spectacular! Which sandpaper/steelwool did you use to get that finish?

@Prorobo - personally, I think the SM5's are a huge upgrade to the SM4's. Just my opinion.

The process I used was pretty similar to others. First I used Naval Jelly and let them set for 10-15 minutes, then washed the Naval Jelly off with water and repeated the previous steps one more time. After doing that I took a 3M Stripping pad and dipped it in CLR and then began too scrub the whole wedge. You want to keep dipping the 3M Pad in CLR every once in a while so the CLR remains fresh.

Played a round w the new wedges Fri and I'm kinda liking the black. Going to wait a while until the get scratched up before messing with them.
