My Concession To The Technological Revolution....

The year was 1994, the "Final Foursome" of our Club Championship, and I was the only Player with Persimmon in the bag. My concession to the technological revolution was to put graphite in my woods. Though I was the youngest member of the foursome, I grew up at the knees of old time Players and old time Pros, and their views, thoughts and opinions shaped mine.

 

These were hand wrapped and hand finished and they were Beautiful!

 

Combined with my Mizzy 14's, I had some lethal arrows, lol. That 3w was my second favorite club, behind my putter.

 

I hardly ever hit the 5, because at the time I played a 2 & 3i. My, do I miss those days ;)

 

I uncovered them in the furnace room in the basement.

 

Anyway. I'm debating having them refinished.

 

I would go on and play these for one more season.

 

Oh yea, my Perrsimmons against their metals held up just fine, lol.

 

I won my second back-to-backer, and my last, LMAO

 

Maybe I should have em redone and bag em, LMAO

You must have been caught in the crossover years like I was. I did not switch to metal woods untill 2002. My crossover version was a Tony Penna driver with a HM55 Aldila graphite shaft. I still have and game that driver with my vintage set now. I never did put a graphite in my 4 wood which is an old H&B with a S300 guess what? I still have it and game it with my vintage set now. To tell you how time changes people on distance I was playing my vintage set 3 weeks ago on my home course and had hit a drive with the old Penna from the gold tees to a spot I had hit it to 13 years ago from the blue tees. I had the same approach to the green a par 5 that I had 13 years ago and then I actually flew that old 4 wood 225 to the center of the green. What the heck lets try this again I flew it straight only 190 into the lake oh well I had to try. I love my classics but I guess if I am going to play some mini events I better use my new tech stuff. If I retire from competition again I will probably play my old stuff

[/quote]Yep, you're correct. These were my Father's partner, and he didn't get a 4w with them, and he couldn't hit them and I hit em, loved em, and bought them from him. I also had a set of Diawa Precision Dark Persimmon woods, with a 4w in the set. These seemed to have more pop than the Precisions. Prior to that, I had either played PowerBuilt Citations FW's with either a Penna or Hogan driver.

Thanks for the correction, as I had totally forgotten that, LMAO. I wish that I could blame the meds but it's not that, lol.

Daiwa made some real nice persimmons back in the day. In the early 80's I played with a lefty that hit Daiwa persimmons with graphite shafts, he played to a 1-2, hit the heck out of the woods and he was not a very big guy, Saw him hit the driver over 300 yards many times.

i used a graf mitsubita 5 wood for years back in the 90,s. also the yonex adx driver was big for a while and easy to hit and long for the day, my wife still has her lady adx wood set in her back up bag. i have 2 different sets of yonex graphite irons. they are nothing special and its easy to see why they failed in the market. esp at 1500-2000$ per set. but my strangest set of graphites are samuri swords. look like a early hybrid. i have 2-pw. they play awefull

Slightly off topic, but seeing that yonex reminds me back in the late 1980's mizuno brought out those carbon headed irons, cannot think of the name right now (anyone?) but they were ridiculously expensive at the time about £150 per club.

I certainly remember those daiwas definately get them out of the closet!

My wife hits one of those graphite or composite head Mizuno drivers now. She picked it out of some estate sale/ trade in stock we had at the old shop. She liked it because it is a pretty blue. So as a good husband should do I cut it down and regripped it for her

I had a no-name composite head graphite shaft Yonex imitation back in the day. It was crazy long (for me) at first, but we fell out of love and I traded it for a Taylor and that for a Lynx Boom Boom with a steel shaft which I still have.
