For public courses in that area, HS Richardson, www.hsrgolf.com/ in Fairfield or Tashua Knolls, www.tashuaknolls.com/index.php in Trumbull would be my choice. If $$ is no object, then you can go to Great River in Milford, www.greatrivergolfclub.com

Callaway Rogue Max LS, 10.5, Kai'li 65S

Is the public able to get on Yale? It sounds like after 11 on weekends and holidays, anyone can play according to this link - http://thecourseatyale.org/info.htm

Whitney Farms in Monroe is decent as well, along the same lines as Tashua and H Smith Richardson. If money is no object, then play Great River or Fox Hopyard (which is not exactly equidistant between you, but worth the trip). But if you can play Yale, do so.

HS Richardson is very tough to get out on.

I used to play there all the time when I lived in CT, I think it requires a Fairfield resident friend logging on at the exact right time to make the following weekends tee times. Is it still like that for morning times on weekends?

To stay near the Rt 95 or the Merritt, Great River or Tashua Knolls is best bet. Morning Tee times at Tashua are tough to come by on weekends. Great river is an outstanding Fazio design but expensive.

I'm a member at Yale, great course but I'm not sure how easy it is to get out without a member sponsoring you. Oxford Greens is nice but out of the way, as is Richter Park.

I played Fairchild Wheeler a number of times when I was at Fairfield University for grad school in the 1990s.. 36 holes, not the world's best golf, but I enjoyed it and it was close to school. Back then it was in great condition and had lots of deer wandering around.

I realize the original intent of this thread has long since passed but I needed to jump in on this one. A LOT has changed over the past 20 years and Fairchild Wheeler is quite possibly the biggest dump in all of CT. This is the absolute worst excuse for a golf course I have ever seen and if you're traveling for more than 10 minutes for your round, forget it! The only time I'll ever play there is during the winter and it needs to be a GN hot deal for under $20 w/ cart for 18. [/rant]

I agree, I currently attend fairfield u and would never play fairchild wheeler. I am from locally but we practice out of Patterson and Racebrook. When I was in highschool the conference championships were held on the black course at fairchild, it was not a great place to be playing for a larger event.

Any changes to these in the past year or so?

Specifically; Is Longshore golf club in Westport any good? I have family down there and we usually drive up to Richter Park, I suggested Great River when I'm down there in a couple of weeks but then someone told me to check out Longshore.

Any advice appreciated!

Longshore had a tough stretch condition wise for the past few years, problems mainly with the greens staff. They have all been replaced and from what I have heard is in much better shape this year. It's a pretty flat, open course, and not too long, 5800 yards I believe. Smith Richardson is definitely a more challenging course topping out at 6700 yards. It's in great shape, and while I may be biased, it's a much better lay out. It was recently voted CT course of the year for 2015. Obviously there are many better courses in CT, many you can't play because they are private, and many that cost 80+ and up, but few offer the combination of affordability, accessibility, and conditioning found at Smith. Pace of play is also good at Smith, even on the weekends. Fairchild Wheeler has had condition problems for a long time. It's mostly due to not charging enough for a round, and not enough money being spent back to the course. It's owned by the town of Bridgeport, and if you know anything about Bridgeport, then you know any profit is probably used elsewhere. It's unfortunate because the Black Course is an interesting and challenging layout, but is let down by the poor conditions, although I haven't played there this year, but the weather in Fairfield has been great for golf courses, so it might be okay at this time. It certainly is the most affordable option for non residents.
