The "laughing with tears emoji" was not meant to be funny - it was my laughing at the persnicketness, narrow-mindness, the fragility of ego of that administrator. I'm an old coot, got no time for such silliness - if it weren't for a few people here who spoke well of that fb-group, I'd not have bothered applying again yesterday. I'm glad I did, there's alot to learn & alot of professionalism in the site.

Yeah, understood about Irish on both sides...over here, where the Irish immigrants were looked down on as second class citizens far too often, it does has a taint of derogatoriness - tho, I did not take your comment that way, I now know...thank you.

Oh, what does "take the rise out of someone" mean...(another expression I've not come across - ain't language fun)

Winnie the Pooh said that....or was it Piglet?

"Winnie the Pooh said that....or was it Piglet?"

Yup, that's taking the rise! 😁

Found this Spalding Robert T Jones Jr 1 iron this weekend & cleaned it up, it's already been reshafted & regripped....have only a guess at the shaft (have similar color & "tip stiff' on an Olimar 18* wood - UST ProForce 65 Gold ). I like Karma grips.
Should be fun to actually use....when I finally get cleared

pictures of the face, the top, and the back would help....also the shafts, hopefully the shaft bands are on one of them...
so far, the Maltby guide shows Acushnet Titleist woods began in 1972 thru to 1975, maybe - the additional pics would help determine further

1971-1974 issue.  Had a set way back then and still play a set on occasion. They’re laminate, not persimmon and play well in my opinion.  The matching irons are the Acushnet AC-108 with tungsten inserts.

Those look like they’ve never been refinished.

Interesting find on that fb marketplace thingie....it was described as a potential for wall hanging (bag & some old clubs). The bag caught my eye, cuz it looked like canvas & leather (yeah, it needed some leather replace/repair). Anyway, met the man who said these were found & were his GrandFather's, who used to be/work/have something to do w/Hollywood. He'd always kinda sorta hoped his GrandFather & these clubs might have played w/Bing Crosby....(that would have been nice, I'll have to see if I can get the GrandFather's name & maybe he did play at least on the same courses).

So the woods are Butchart Genuine Model persimmon woods (I'm guessing these are pre Butchart-Nichols)...but they have steel shafts, pencil thin at the head neck. As best as I could get, the lofts are 1 wood is ~12*, 2 wood is ~14*, & the 3 wood is ~17*. The signature on the top is "C S Butchart". There is no insert on the face & weighted at the back.  The whipping more or less fell off in my fingers. It looks as if there is some split in the neck, but would that have much effect as long as the shaft went thru to the sole? Also, the grain seems to run from face to back. So just how stable would the head be? Oh..."Opus artificem probat" translates as  "the work proves the craftsman". The grips are leather & in great shape. Finally, don't know if you can see it, or enlarge it for yourselves, at the bottom of the sole are figures, at the top of the sole it says "66 hand made". Each wood has "12 oz" (as far as I can make out), followed by either a "B" or "8"...then again, the 3 wood looks like "10 drw". Are they talking swing weights or draw?????

The other club turned out to be a hickory shafted jigger....in the circle is "Spalding Gold Medal"; above the circle is an accurate atop and arrow; below the circle is the number 1. On either side of the circle are what look like a flower. On the toe, it says "hand forged, the figure of a hammer, reg us pat off". The sole merely says "jigger"...and the face of the club is dot punched, however I can see no pattern of dots, guessing they are hand punched. The shaft looks split as it enters the hosel. The leather grip seems to just need some gentle care to restore (at the very least could be a template to make new strip).

There is little info on C.S. Butchart, he was a Scot. Learned club making in Scotland & England, was a pro at a couple of courses, had a club making business' that folded. I don't know exactly when he crossed the pond to the US, but the Butchart-Nichols company began in 1926.....so could this pencil thin steel shaft date to the '20s? The jigger is also interesting, is the hammer a cleek mark?

Any info would be most appreciated or point me in a direction....

Thanks for looking & taking the time/energy to read this far.

the leading edge of the jigger is not really as jagged as it looks....more like the indents ya get from pebbles/hard ground....

@bcstones, I can help you out a little on the Jigger. I checked my book on Cleek marks and the hammer was circa 1918, and the arrow accurate were in use 1910-20. Spalding used a lot of different Cleek marks. The club is probably from around 1918. The face is definitely hand punched.

I am not much help on the woods.

Wow!  Love the Atlantic bag.

Re: face being torn up.  A vintage club restorer would end up cutting the face off, gluing a block of fresh persimmon on and rebuilding it because the wood got soft and was torn up by ball striking.

It was a VERY good day at the Goodwill. I found all of these beauties in two stores on my lunch break! Needless to say, this is not the norm. It must be spring cleaning time.

There was even a really nice shoe brush and a wheat-back penny in the bag!

The Ram Watson driver has what appears to be tear-out from machining on the face. Any tips on filling this on persimmon faces?

That isn't tear out, rather poor care from someone who struck out of the toe a lot. As the finish wears away from use, the brittle wood becomes exposed and eventually chips away. You can graft persimmon from a donor head into the face or simply strip the finish and fill with clear epoxy.

What's with the holes in the hosel of the Gibson? Was someone trying to lower the swing weight? I don't think I've seen that before...

Standard Maxwell patterb hosel, as you observed, if you take weight out of the non-hitting area you can relocate it on a flange.

Grabbed a taped up bundle of clubs at a local goodwill today. Got it home and these are the keepers. Late 50s Wilson Staff 2 iron, Hogan Apex driver, and a pretty nice First Flight persimmon 3 wood. The rest will be parted out for the shafts and grips. Sadly the Hogan has a dent in the shaft at the grip line 😕 .

Someone at my club told me they make woods out of metal now but I don't believe him.

If they do, it will never catch on! 🤣

Some of us will never sell out, lol.

I've got one of those graphite headed Whales....goes pretty well, which I use when it's too wet for my persimmons.
