So there is no difference between these Callaway balls...?

Recommended Posts

Hex Control

Hex Hot Pro

X2 Hot +

CXR Control

HEX Diablo Tour

HX Diablo Tour

HX Bite

Warbird Plus

So with what I've read the above balls are all:

a) 3-piece

b) Trionomer covered

c) Hex dimpled

d) Designed for distance with extra spin

I am hoping someone can share some differences between the above balls as it's frustrating not knowing the differences (if there are any), or more frustrating if there are no differences then why produce/sell, at least, eight balls that have the same specs.

Anyone...??? Cheers.

Hex Control = Literally the same as Hot Pro
Hex Hot Pro = Literally the same as Hex Control
X2 Hot + = Replaces and designed to fill the role of the Hot Pro. Almost identical ball, would be surprised if anyone could tell them apart in a blind test.
CXR Control = I've only heard in passing about this one, it may be the previous generation of Costco ball vs. Hex Control
HEX Diablo Tour = Ancestor to Hot Pro, designed to fill the same "spot" in Callaway's line-up. But I'm almost certain there are some differences in construction (i.e. compression, cover hardness)
HX Diablo Tour = Ancestor to Hex Diablo Tour, same comment as I made for that ball too.
HX Bite = I know a lot less about this other than it's also 3-piece, I think it might be a combo of Ionomer and Urethane that Callaway calls Iothane. Wouldn't worry too much about this as it's been discontinued for 4-5 years now I think. Unless you live in Canada where you can get some still: http://www.golftown....alls-12pk-13241
Warbird Plus = 2-piece rock. In ascending order of release date: Warbird, Warbird Plus, Warbird 2.0, Hex Warbird, Warbird 3.0
can share some differences between the above balls as it's frustrating not knowing the differences (if there are any), or more frustrating if there are no differences then why produce/sell, at least, eight balls that have the same specs.

Above are some comments about these balls. BTW, to further complicate things, there's also the Warbird 3.0 which is 3-piece and is a special branding of the Hex Hot Pro. Clear as mud, no? All these balls represent 4-5 years of product cycling, Callaway likes to market a new ball and new name every year it seems. But they are good, so I put up with it.

I think the constant name changing has got to hold their golf ball sales back some. You find a ball you like and before you know it, it's gone. People end up finding a ball they can count on not to disappear too soon. I would think that it's hard to get those folks back once they find another favorite ball.

Thank you for your replies, and ODMtesseract for your explanation.

I was hoping more would come forward and shed some light. Hopefully this will act as a bump. @Storm319 (i think) - if you out there then come forward mate.

I have to agree on this to some point. I mean I like the top of the line Callaway balls. They seem to change every year. I liked the previous, previous, previous Tour ball, then the Hex black tour, now I like the Speed Regime 2. On the other hand, the only other ball I typically use is the Pro V1. It's been called the Pro V1, and probably will continue to be called the Pro V1. I know they will improve it, but I don't have to wonder if it will be Tour Iz this, or Chrome that, or Hex this, or Speed that... makes me dizzy

Agree completely. Another reason Titleist owns the golf ball market, their competitors' make it easy for them.

I believe these are all of the 3-piece surlyn/ionomer covered balls released under the Callaway brand (let me know if I have missed any):

HX Hot - first 3-piece surlyn/ionomer covered ball under Callaway name
HX Hot Bite - softer covered counterpart to the HX Hot
HX Pearl - basically the HX Hot rebadged and marketed to women
HX Bite - replacement for the HX Hot Bite, biggest change was cover durability
HX Hot Plus - lower compression replacement original HX Hot
HX Diablo Tour - slightly lower compression and softer cover replacement for the HX Bite
Warbird 3.0 - Dick's exclusive, not sure which one but definitely just one of the 3-piece surlyn models rebadged
CB1 Tour - another discount retailer exclusive. not sure which one but definitely just one of the 3-piece surlyn models rebadged
HX Hot Pro - discount retailer exclusive, likely a rebadged HX Diablo Tour (similar packaging)
HEX Hot - replacement for the HX Hot Plus
HEX Hot Pro - replacement for the HX Diablo Tour
HEX Control - discount retailer exclusive, likely a rebadged HEX Hot or HEX Hot Pro
X2 Hot - likely replacement for the HEX Hot
X2 Hot+ - likely replacement for the HEX Hot Pro
CXR Control - discount retailer exclusive, likely any of the previous 3-piece surlyn balls rebadged

One thing to note, several of these models have undergone packaging changes with the name intact however it is impossible to tell if the ball itself actually changed. The "exclusive" models are more than likely just a way around their own MAP pricing controls while still maintaining control with other retailers. They tend to rebadge existing models for sale to the mega discount/high volume retailers like Sam's Club and Costco. While there may have been slight changes from model to model, ultimately these all feature the same overall construction (single polybutadiene core, single surlyn/ionomer mantle, single surlyn/ionomer cover) so all of the models still available today should perform similarly. Really not enough difference to right home about.

I like the SR2 also, from the news in the Callaway Alpha thread, it seems that Callaway is releasing a new tour ball in January and it's suppose to be a game changer in the way that the Rule 35 was. I havent played a callaway ball consistently since the HX Tour 56 and was thinking about gaming the SR2, I guess not since they are moving on to another premium ball.

Lower Level Balls.

Srixon has been keeping the same name for a couple releases with the Z-Star and Z-Star XV (although they had the SL in there that they discontinued)

They are all crappy soft feeling hacker balls. If you want good Callaway balls go chrome plus or the new speed regime balls.
Well, Callaway is for hackers so I'm not sure why you're upset they make hacker balls.

@Storm319 - thanks for providing your input to this.

Played a round yesterday. First 3 holes I used the Warbird Plus then the Hex Control for next 7, then the Hex Pro for the last 8. Still stand by the Hex Control feels very nice for a non-urethane ball, especially for putting, but the Hex Pro trumped it by far. Not played the Hex Pro before but I was surprised by how well it held up. After 8 holes trying to stick a lot of back spin on it it didn't scuff. Hex Pro is a nice ball, I will need to play it along side the Chrome + (another 4 piece ball).

Thanks.

One ball missing from your list is the HEX Distance. I think it's a slightly tweeked Diablo ball. I really liked it and it was my favorite until the SuperSoft came out.

I believe the HEX Distance is a 2-piece and is a rebadged 2-piece HEX Diablo
