Shaft testing

 

I enjoy hitting the ball as far as possible, while I pride myself on being very accurate. In fact, when I competed at the 2013 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship I averaged over 375 yards while hitting the grid nearly 65% of the time (the balls that missed were just a few yards right as the did not draw.) I have been looking for the right shaft for me for some time now and I have been testing a multitude of shaft brands over the past year side by side. The brands that I have tested have been House of Forged, Fujikura, Penley, and the most recent shaft company I have tested is Paderson Shafts.

I have been testing multiple Paderson shafts over the last year and have been completely overwhelmed by the results. Keep in mind that I have been testing long drive shafts by multiple companies. What I found was amazing to me. I tested the KINETIXx IMRT™ GREEN - 860DR at 45.5" in a 7.5* Krank Formula 5 and also in a 10.5* SLDR. The ball speed using the Kevlar Green shaft was just as fast as the other shafts tested at 48". Here is what made the biggest difference, my spin rates have dropped with this shaft from over 2500 rpm to around 1600-1800 rpm. That has allowed for me to increase my loft just a little to allow for optimum launch angle without increasing spin rates.

 

By decreasing the spin rate and only using 45.5" in my on course driver, it has allowed me to increase distance and decrease dispersion. This is a huge deal for all golfers.

 

Paderson Long drive shaft review

 

I have also been testing the KVMT870-LD which is not yet available on Paderson's website. This shaft has completely blown the other long drive shafts away. How can a person that uses a new shaft with the exact same club head speed as other shafts increase ball speed and distance? I had the same questions so I emailed the CEO/lead engineer (Jason). Below is his answer:

The specifications for toque and cpm were precisely set in each shaft technology, shaft type and flex code option at the conclusion of our thorough robot testing, which required over a year of R&D.

 

We set each spec upon quantifying increases in ball speed and tighter dispersion all shafts KINETIXx versus the industry leading most popular shafts. In each and every shaft technology drivers through to irons. We found in some of our shafts, higher torque values equated to increased ball speed and tighter shot dispersion on impacts across the face. This enabled us to increase the quantity and therefore contribution of the exotic materials used in each shaft.

 

Golfers interpret low torque as high strength and necessary for tighter dispersion and that's misnomer. Whereas Torque can contribute to shaft speed and recovery through impact. Torque specs for the most part have been established as a threshold number relative to material performance and durability.

 

Our methods of construction are unlike any other shaft company in the WORLD! Because of this, KINETIXx loaded technologies, IMRT and VMT both use materials that have an appreciably greater degree of elastic strength and elongation as compared to all other premium table rolled shafts marketed today.

 

The KVMT LD shaft is an extension of our VMT line that uses Amorphous material, nanotechnology in conjunction with our proprietary thermosetting resin composition and vacuum curing process. Producing a composition 5-6x the elastic strength of the conventional LD shafts and therefore higher in torque yet capable of increasing in frequency the greater the force applied.

While the torque on the long drive shaft is higher than most, the answer above defined why the shaft was able to produce such mind blowing results. Using the same driver head, a Krank Formula 5 5*, and testing multiple shafts head to head against it, the Paderson shaft came out with more than 7mph greater ball speed while decreasing my spin rates. For those of you who do not know anything about what 7mph of ball speed or decreasing spin rate does, it equaled out to about 15 yards of more distance. 15 yards of distance just by using a KINETIXx loaded shaft while decreasing dispersion is INSANE!

 

Testing was done using marked balls on a golf course, and both an Ernest Sports ES14 and a GC2 launch monitor.

375 yard drives seem pretty common at GolfWRX.
If you drove it 425, you might expect WRX folks to be wowed.

Hi jack. My numbers are accurate and actually did put up a 430 yard ball in Madison, Alabama at the local qualifier which was the longest ball of the event.

These shafts really are mind blowing. Ball flight is a lot tighter and spin rate is down with increased ball speed

A very interesting read. I'm not sure I swallowed it all in one mouthful and it had a little bit too much quoting of company marketing materials, but it doesn't matter. I'm about to do a Paderson shaft test for another site so I'll be able to see for myself what they have to offer a fellow with a decidedly less than superhuman swing speed. When it's done and my obligation is over, I'll look this thread up again and add my unvarnished opinions for better or worse.
