Question for SkyCaddie or Laser Finder Owners

Do you share distances with others in your group?

I've read all the long threads on SC vs PS and can't find an answer to this question. I am very close to picking up a SC SG3 and one of my buddies says "I'll always be willing ride with you once you get that" with that laugh that says I'm not really kidding. I know if I'm playing for money that I won't share distances, but I have a feeling that it will get annoying after a while if someone always wants me to give them their distances during our normal rounds.

How do you guys handle all your distance mooching buddies?

I always carry a Bushnell Pinseeker and we almost always play for money. I share the yardage with my group.

 

Funnily enough just yesterday on the #7 Par 3 at the Former TPC of Virginia Beach my buddy had a 9 iron out and was on the tee. He asked me to shoot it for him and he estimated it at around 132 yards. I Bushnell'd it for him at 140 yards even. He went back to the bag for the 8 iron and made his 5th hole in one. Gorgeous flight 2 hops and in the jar! That shot cost me some duckies but I am not at all sad I game him the right number. My 2 cents.

This exposed par 3 can be a very dangerous, windswept challenge. A player with any indecision should choose an extra club and play toward the left of the green. This open chipping area leaves a relatively easy recovery, while approaches just slight right will often bounce down the back into the water. The front of the green slopes towards the lake while the back remains relatively flat.

My group always shares, yardage is common knowledge, not "advise". They still have to hit the shot to take my money...I like my chances.

If I am sitting right next to their ball, I will give it to them if they ask for it, but I won't drive all the way cross the fairway to give it to them.

I give the distances b/c it speeds up play. Most of the time, it occurs on par threes and I give the information to the entire group. It's no different then him asking what the yardage on the sprinkler head IMO.

 

Will I walk across the fairway just to shoot a yardage, probably not. Assuming someone is reasonably close to me, most conversations go like this:

Him: How far are you?

Me: I am 163.

Him. Thanks (and he estimates his yardage off me)

 

BTW - when I use my laser, I don't normally use it for every shot from the fairway. It can be a hassle to get it out, shoot the pin, put it back. If I am near a sprinkler head, I just estimate.

 

Assuming I have the course mapped, I prefer the SG4 b/c it hangs off a lanyard from my bag. When I get to my shot, I glance at the bag for the yardage and move on. Love the SG4 as all my home course (45 hole public course) are four star mapped.

If somebody asks what MY yardage to the pin is, I'll give it to them, and they normally play off that.

But typically I don't shoot another player's yardage. In friendly rounds I might if I'm standing right beside them, but not in competition.

Par 3s I'll laser, and if the group asks, I'll give them the number.

I always share it and will walk over to someone else's ball and give a yardage if they are carrying a hazard and don't have a marker nearby. It's faster than them finding a sprinkler and pacing it off.

On the first few holes, I just walk near them and say, "Do you want to know the exact distance?" Some guys say, "Sure!" Others just shrug it off. I then know whom to offer distances to as we go around. I always am willing to share the data.

That 7th hole at the TPC virginia beach can be a real monster when the wind is blowing. I seem to remember hitting a 5 iron into that hole from 135 yds. An ace there is a real accomplishment.

 

Personally, I share distance if somebody asks (although at my home club I don't even bother carrying it anymore - after a while, you know the course so well you don't need it). I don't think it's ever cost me any money. Most people can't hit their clubs consistent distances anyways. If anything giving them a real yardage is likely to cause them to mis-club. They think they hit their 9 iron 145 until you tell them it's 145 and their 9 iron lands 10 yds short.
