How do you like the putter without a sight line?

 

I'm way late in responding to this, sorry, but I love this putter. When Spiders have a line on them, I aim too far left. This head is compact enough so that the rest of the body is enough for alignment. But this isn't for everyone. I think most would do better with a line.

The KK had standard tipping from TM, so it was one inch. I'm just about to post a new update. The M1 is gone, replaced by an M2, and I'm not settled on a shaft. Currently testing HZRDUS Black and Yellow, and a Tour AD GP. Trying to flatten the flight a bit and also bring the spin down a touch.

What's it like putting with the Spider without any alignment aid?

 

I'm torn on it so far, to be honest. I expected to love the lack of a sightline, but in practice I think that I was relying on the line of my Spider S to set the putter down in the correct spot. And I think it had a subconscious effect on starting my stroke. Without the line, my putter head is drifting to different spots behind the ball and I have to focus heavily on starting the stroke correctly.

 

I usually putt with a line on the ball and the first thing I tried was to remove that, but it was a disaster. I put the line back on 3 holes into the round. I love everything about the putter, but I may need a sightline. I don't have any tournament rounds left this year, so I'm going to put a strip of white tape on the head for the rest of the season. If that's a success, I may have to modify the head next year in some fashion to make it legal for play.

 

Here's an update from a year and half later: I love not having a line! I tried putting with a strip of tape briefly after replying to you and that only lasted for a few putts. I found that I simply needed to deliberately practice alignment a few times a month and everything was great after that.

Normally I do all my own club work, but I had a local club fitter/builder put these irons together. We did all testing with a 6 iron and then he built the rest of the set to match the MOI of the 6 iron. I don't know much about his exact process except that he uses 0.4" increments between clubs for an MOI set and he measures everything on an MOI scale.

 

I will say this, the long irons feel great because they're slightly shorter and lighter than normal. The short irons feel a little weird because they're slightly longer and heavier than I'm used to.

I love the feel of the TP5 around the greens and the slightly more penetrating flight. Still more testing to do, but I'm pretty sure this is my 2017 ball.

Definitely give it a try. I played the Tour Preferred X the past 3 years and the Pro V1x before that, so I thought I would fit into the TP5x by default. I was surprised at how much I liked the plain TP5. I still need to do some testing this spring, but TP5 is definitely the leader at the moment.

 

The Srixon XV is still on my list to give a good solid run through, but there are a few things about it that bug me. First, the ball has a very firm feel on every club. It performs, but I don't know if I can get past the feel. Second, and this is stupid, but the bright white color turns me off. I'm used to premium balls having an off-white color from way back in my balata days. The bright white just looks "wrong." It's a dumb reason to potentially avoid playing a ball, but everyone has quirks.

how did the t1100 compare to the black hzrdus of the past?? i understand a little more counter balance and better feel...i am looking at the M2 with a black 62 6.5 and in the sim it seems tight to me...

Sorry for not responding. For some reason, I never get notified of replies even though I have it turned on. I really liked the T1100. It's counterbalanced and definitely has more feel in the midsection of the shaft. I found the black to just be stiff all the way from butt to tip. I could play the black, but it there are better feeling shafts. To me, the T1100 feels like a tightened up Yellow, if that makes any sense.

 

But, as you'll see in the latest update, I've switched. That M1/T1100 combo seemed great, but it spun way too much for me. Would like to try that same thing with a lower lofted head. I'm now in a 2017 M2 9.5 with a Tour AD GP-6s.

Thanks! The T1100 I liked was a 6.0 untipped. I agree with you that the GP6 stiff seems weird, but that shaft performed the best when I tested a bunch of them last year. The only thing I can attribute it to is that the GP is a little stiffer than the stated flex, so it's probably more like an S+. I've always been a tweener between S and X (105-108 SS). I can load an X fine, but I have a smooth enough transition that I can play a slightly stiffer S, also.

Check out the update with some notes on 2018. I expect the wedges will be replaced by MG antique bronze 54 and a Hi-Toe 60. But the Button Back is currently back in the bag and that one might not come out. Then again, I tend to switch putters often, so who knows. Playing two years with the Itsy Bitsy was a long time for me to stick with one putter.

Nice additions to the bag! A little surprised to see you back with a Scotty but 2 years is a long time with a putter! I could really see you with a Hi Toe for sure. Where should we get warm so we could hit the M3/M4. Hurry up Spring!
