One Course To Play Near Pebble - other than Pebble

Hi Guys I am in Carmel this week. I have played pebble a few times so I wondering what suggestions you have for another course to play. Spyglass is the obvious choice I think - but it was punched last week, so it might not be the best.

Poppy good choice post renovation. I personally love Bayonet too much much easier on the wallet and a very stout test of golf. Spyglass is #1 but would not pay to play it on punched greens.

Monterrery Country Club - I believe its used during the AT&T Pro-AM rotation.

Spy would be #1...

Monterey Shore would be #2... But it is private

Pasa would be #3... But is an hour drive away...

Spanish Bay would be #4...

Poppy would be #5... Don't expect much if you settle for Poppy...

I love the design of Pasa... Same designer as Augusta National... Had a home on one of the fairways...

So bump it up the list if you can drive... Especially in the weeks just before the Masters...

Spanish Bay is so much different as a links style. If you never played there, you should try it.

Def not Tehama that place was no good for me. It felt like they got some land and no matter what they were going to put a golf course on it. It doesnt really work for me.

If money is of no concern, Spanish Bay is absolutely gorgeous. I think you can see the ocean from every hole and drinks out on the patio after the round while the bagpiper plays is something to remember. If you are looking for a better value, Bayonet is great for that!

There's some different opinions here. Here's my take: Poppy or Bayonet. I've played both recently and thought they were a lot of fun. Spanish Bay was okay. It's on what I consider to be linksland but is more a target golf type of course. I'd check the green maintainence there before I played it though. I haven't played the renovated Black Horse (sister course to Bayonet) so I can't speak to it. Monterey Penisula Country Club would be terrific but it's private and could be hard to access. It would be expensive too.

Bayonet. Great course and is much easier on the wallet. Plus if you're up for playing two rounds black horse is right there on property.

I like Bayonet + Blackhorse.

In the area I've also played Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills (before the recent renovation), Monterey Peninsula (Dunes) and the Preserve.

I'd happily play Bayonet, Blackhorse, Pac Grove, Pebble or Spyglass anytime. (The others were fine courses, but not exciting.)

As it worked out I managed to end up paying Cypress Point and Spyglass (after a punch).

Cypress was one of the best flukes in my life and worked out from being a nice guy who likes to talk to people. It was great - enough said.

Spyglass was also great and I thought better than Pebble, though in my opinion you have to play Pebble at least once if you can.

I played Spanish Bay (loved it) and Carmel Valley Ranch (really like it but didn't love it). If I could go back, I'd fit in Pasatiempo or Poppy Hills.

For anyone else interested, and Spyglass being off the table, I'd go to Bayonet.

Pasatiempo will be brown by May since we had a dry winter (again).

I would put Spyglass up there as MUST play if you are in the area. But I am someone who will only get out this way every 5 or 6 years and wether I pay $100 for a round or $300 for round is not the biggest issue, it more how best I use the time I have well I am in the area. Even with the punch I was really glad I played spyglass. I have played Pebble twice and I tend to think that is enough now. But I would play spyglass when I return the area.

Cypress was a once in a lifetime thing, the way it went down I was half thinking I would show up and they would have no clue who I was and it would all be a prank. Of course it was great and 15,16 and 17 lived up to the hype as some of the best holes in the world.
