This is EXACTLY the case. There was this intersection of Stu's "old ping putter" stories, trying a new Ping Zing TR at a LGS, and the availability of the posted Zing 2. Just waiting to find a little of the "magic" that Stu posts about. LOL. I'm beginning to think this is the part of the story that can't be replicated.

Maybe a little lead tape will do the trick?

Morning/Evening Kathy Marie & Gents :)

This is the driver, along with a 3 & 5w that I got with the irons-

Obviously, a lot of mat time ;)

I haven't touched em yet, the driver being the most marked up, however can I clean em up myself, and if so, how and what should I use and are they worth getting refinished?

I only played Penna drivers and PB woods so I don't know too much about Mac drivers or the MT woods-

Thanks Much & Mitch, that Putter is Saweeeett and I Love the bag and I don't even play Titleist, lol. I've always likes their Staff bags!!

Mizzy?

Not so much ;)

Stay well my Friends,
Richard

Nice woods Richard. Whoa, those are a lot of mat marks. For cleaning, I use Simply Green sprayed onto an old tee shirt. For the metal areas, use a worn scotchbrite pad. Lately, taken to using #0000 steel wool with a little water on it for soles and cleaning up steel shafts.

Maybe the experts would frown on this approach. But I've not had any adverse effects.

Yea, a lot of marks and how in the hell do you get mat marks on the BACK of the friggin wood?

I mean, we're talkin serious bounce, LMAO.

I don't recall ever seeing it back there and judging by the thickness of it, he hit a lot that way, lol-

I'd love to see his irons and metal woods, lol

Thanks again and have a great day :)

Ooooh...I'm looking for one a little bit lighter than what I've got in the stable, so for me that Zing 2 may just be the one! There's one I found one eBay (as have six others :(), but I'm reluctant to pay the $79 ask. Damn the current collectiblity of BeCu!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Stu's infamous putter is SS with lead taped sole, somewhat like pictured, however-since posted your BeCu Zing2, here is mine acquired from a yard sale years ago
Thanks that is it but the sole is not the only thing lead taped mine is also lead taped on both sides and in the bottom of the "u" in the back. But if I took all the lead tape off it would look exactly like yours. Footnote: Found another Ping blast from the past lurking in the closet I had forgot about but knew I had my original Ping Anser from 1972 with the sound slot grip was rotted so I regripped it last night. Now it has been modified but not by me a friend of mine who was a master club craftsman balanced the face and cut a sweet spot line in the top many years ago. Have not putted with it in years. May take it out after supper tonight. I gamed it for years before I got the Zing. Funny story goes with it though. The Ping rep came to visit my Dad at his shop wanting to put some in. My Dad told him "that is the ugliest POS I have ever seen but I like you and I don't think they will sell worth a crap but you can try" We sold 5 the first week and he ordered more. Mine was of course the demo which we did not need after the first week so it migrated and stayed in the bag

Unbelievably, I stopped by the same store where I got these irons on Weds and look what what was all by its lonesome in the bin, lol-

Probably got separated in the back as it was not there when I bought the set cuz the set was taped and besides, I went through the bin basically iron by iron.

Anyhoo, it's nice to get the complete set.

Have a great weekend Kathy Marie & Gents :)

On the same Ping putter subject yesterday we got into a discussion about Brad Faxon and I told the guys he used a Zing but our Golf Director says it was a My Day. I do know one WRXer found one in a lake and restored it and I swear it was a Zing. Does anyone know?
When Faxon first made the tour, he used a My Day, when his clubs did not make a flight to CA for event at Pebble, he used a backup JWells Zing2 belonging to Janzen for a couple of weeks, before going back to his My Day. Shortly after returning the My Day to the bag, Scotty Cameron made the Fax Day that has been a solid starter in bag for years.

Is the My Day just a Zing with a plumbers neck? They sure look the same other than the neck difference. Question all part of the continuing education process.

Hey Richard, have you tried working on the wood yet? I've done a few lately and had some luck with them. All you need is a sanding sponge block, some 0000 steel wool, a fine file, a can of spray lacquer, and a lot of elbow grease. This is not a collector refurbish, but keeps them protected for play. Here's a few I've done recently:

Congrats Richard! It's the nature of this business! I picked up a Hogan 4 wood that I needed in one thrift, then about 2 weeks later found the 1,3,5, in another store several blocks away, as verified by the owner's name on the shaft labels! I've asked at several places about missing clubs "in back," only to be told that there were none. (Bet Liam Neeson wouldn't be "Taken" in so easily!)
Anyway, I hope that you're still enjoying your dream set, I've enjoyed following this thread. Thanks all!

Thanks Alan,

It was certainly the roughest of all of my persimmons - it had screws that needed to be filed down (easy to strip! just try to remove!), and wood that had shrunk back from the insert.....plus a pretty hammered up soleplate.

So after not getting the screws out, I had to file them down, then sand the insert and screws down to get them level with the wood. Had to also sand down the soleplate, and strip off the varnish using a "safe" stripper, plus take the worst digs out of the leading edge. Then it got a very good sanding with four grits of sandpaper, starting with 80 then 120 (in paper) then to medium then fine sponges. Then it got a nice rubdown with 0000 steel wool.

After that, it was five coats of spray lacquer with 0000 steel wool in between.

Downside is it did lose some of the dark brown color it was, and is now a slightly lighter brown. Upside is since letting the lacquer cure for a week before hitting, the finish seems pretty durable, and it looks as good as redone even after a 9 hole round and about 20 balls at the range. Plus the winged MT stands out better than it did before.

I have an assortment of old Macs that need to be refinished. I am hesitant to try myself without severe guidance and hand holding from my fellow GolfWRXers.

The Mac was in such rough shape, my thoughts were that it would be hard to make it worse. Maybe pick the worst of the lot to start with Alan, so that way, if you're not 100% happy, it's not as if you wrecked your favorite. Plus, unless you take a ton of wood off, a refinish can always be undone and redone until you're happy. Just be careful for things that do disappear such as labels and stampings.

Scott, how much time and cost do you put into each refinish job? I have some that need some fill and some that look like near 10's.

Thanks Bob,

I hope to get around to whipping the Personal model one this weekend....finally. Seems I got these from you in November of 2013. It was time to get them out of mothballs. Still have any hoard left?
Scott, how much time and cost do you put into each refinish job? I have some that need some fill and some that look like near 10's.
Well supplies for a basic refinish stack up as:

Can of spray Lacquer: $6
Sandpaper: $2
Sanding Sponges: $2
Keyhole fine File set: $5
0000 Steel Wool (Big Bag): $5

If you could do 20 clubs with the above, you'd be at about $1 per club. If you wanted to do paintfill, just get some dollar store nail polish. I think it gets a bit pricier when you get into the staining, etc.

Safe Stripper (only if you need to strip a finish - extreme cases): $8. I used this on the H&B and regretted it, though I do like its grain. The Burke I just sanded. The Mac turned out nice, but some may have preferred it without the stripping. For refinishing the two aluminum insert Macs I now have, I will not strip, and will instead sand heavily. Main thing is to get off the old lacquer without damaging what's underneath.

Time wise, the most intensive is during the filing and sanding process. For the Mac, it was close to 1.5 hours with all of the filing on the screws, plus filing to take the worst off the front of the soleplate, plus lots of sanding to get the insert and screws down to wood level. Plus, I applied safe stripper three times, then cleaned it off three times. This is the worst of it.

Then, while I did other things around the house, I came back to the Mac every hour or so to rub it down thoroughly with the steel wool, then apply another coat of lacquer.

If you picked four clubs or so to do at the same time, you can get them all prepped, then pick some time to lacquer them. That's the easiest part.

If I scored the clubs, the Mac would have been a 6, the H&B a 7 (also had to have the screws filed and insert sanded) and the Burke an 8. That's why it got only sanding, steel wool, then five coats of lacquer with the steel wool rub.

If the clubs were for display, I likely would have followed Dave Woods' guide more closely. However, since I just wanted them clean and protected for play, it was a matter of checking the mechanics, and lacquering them up. Same with my Hogan FWs - they didn't need a full recondition - just a little filing, lots of sanding, and some lacquer.

Personally I wouldn't touch a club over an 8, at least until I had played it down to a 6.

Oh, and if you're not into rewhipping, be careful around it, especially with the sanding.
