MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

Domes was very solid yesterday at Hobbits. Hitting the ball great and just dog-f*cking himself with the flat stick. He also has a totally sweet new bag and sweet putter. He had a ton of great looks at birdie. He had tree issues on 10, but if he putted like he strikes the ball, he could have shot 77. I mean, he was inside 18 feet (and usually inside 15) on 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 13, 17. Didn't make one of them, and 3-putted 11. Siegel is powerful and wild. When he gets leisure time (and desire), he can be a very good golfer. Rolled it nice, too in spots.

I had a weird day out there. On 1/2/3/6/8 I was pin high in the rough in regulation and only got up and down once (and doubled 2). Dead straight forward chips that went to 5 feet instead of 3 feet, and didn't make many 5 footers. Those "pin high from the rough" shots are the meat-and-potatoes of scoring when you're hitting the ball well -- but not great.

On 7, I hit a nice drive, pushed second shot a little, it hit the cart path and bounced 6 inches OB.

On 9, I pulled it left into the pine straw and just couldn't find the ball. 44 on the front and felt like it could have been a 39. 39 on the back with a shot-of-the-year(*) candidate (for me) and didn't make a putt outside of 5 feet.

(*) On 15, I barely made the fairway, then pull-topped a 4w left of the path. I was in jail. Period. Muddy lie in teh rough. Pin was back right. Back of the green was 191 according to GPS. I couldn't even see the green, but I had a tall tree directly in my line. All I could do was hit a high sweeping fade. I couldn't even hit 4-iron because it had to get up over the short trees so I was thinking front of the green would be nice. Ball hit about 8 feet from the pin and rolled through to the back fringe. It was ri -- god d@mn -- diculous. Nice putt from the fringe to give the birdie a shot, and made the come-backer.

Full disclosure, the 3-putt on 11 was a direct result of still being mad about #10. Hit the drive on the hill to the right. Tried to punch out, ball hit a tree and came back at me. Jumped out of the way and tweaked the knee, hit another punch shot, ball came back AGAIN but at least out in the fairway. Hit it to 35 feet and three putted. I was pissed.

I need to remember to take an extra club on 11 tomorrow and Sunday if I'm not furious. I had a little extra on the PW and it went dead middle of the green. Then angerputted past the hole 8 feet and missed the comebacker.

That 11th hole was a little sneaky. FAbb's guide said it was downhill enough to affect club choice. I trusted that and played the shorter of the two clubs I was thinking of, and just barely cleared the retaining wall. Though I think part of that is that my GPS didn't have the front of the green tagged properly. GPS said 117 to the front if I remember right, but I hit it 127 (Game Golfed yardage) and was still short. In either case, I'll play it longer and just avoid the back right bunker. Everywhere else isn't too bad for an up and down.

Yeah, let's not trust the person that has played the course the most, and go with knowledge based on one shot played in cold, wet conditions.

Hey, I said I trusted you on it. Just not the play for me on this particular day, and Sunday should be cool and wet too.

When I was at the Olney Golf Park, I hit the Callaway Apex irons with the recoil shafts. They were nice.

Actually I first hit the Apex Pros. I think those were a bit too much club for me. Definitely shorter and not so forgiving.

But the regular Apexes seemed very playable to me. When I first stood over the club, the head did seem tiny compared to my Ping G30s. So I was a bit concerned, but I didn't really have any problem hitting them. A bit less forgiving than my Pings, but better feel. It's nice to know I could go with a set that isn't super game improvement-y.

Not that I'm in the market for new clubs or anything.

They were definitely watering down the course heavily Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in anticipation of letting it dry out through the weekend. They are ripping up the greens Tuesday morning so if they completely brown out by Sunday then no one really cares. Sounds like they maybe misjudged how much water they put down initially but I'm guessing it dries out pretty good over the weekend.

Saw this drill Wednesday that Fabb claims is a great drill but I wouldnt go near it - let alone taking full speed driver swings.
