2005 U.S. Open Championship Winner Michael Campbell Announces Retirement

Michael Campbell, the 2005 U.S. Open Champion, has announced his retirement. Campbell also won 7 other times on the European Tour.

When Michael was good he was very good. He had a nice career, with more downs than ups. But he loved the game, and I'm sure he'll find a way to stay connected to it.

I remember Michael having a blazing run in late 1999, early 2000. He started 2000 by winning the New Zealand Open and Heineken Classic in consecutive weeks. After missing the cut at the ol' Greg Norman Holden Classic, he bounced back with a huge victory at the Australian Masters.

That torrid run squeaked him into the 2000 WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship, and a first round dual with world #1, Tiger Woods. Giddy with success, when asked about his upcoming match Michael said "I want a piece of Tiger."

When their match finally happened they approached each other on the first tee and Tiger gets right in Michael's face, shakes his hand, and says "You want a piece of me? You got it."

Tiger thumped Campbell 5&4 in that match.

Have to give it to campbell, Ames got it much harder with his 9:8.

Tiger might have come out on top that day, but who's laughing now? Campbell retires, while Tiger is out there struggling to just stay relevant.

It probably got tough with that divorce. I remember him winning the 2005 US. He was the reason why I started playing golf. He had junior clincs up and down the country, which I was lucky enough to attend.

What a ridiculous statement. Tiger could retire any day he feels like it, with his millions and millions. Campbell was a flash in the pan who is retiring because he can't make a living on tour anymore.

Exactly. If a person thinks for one second that Michael Campbell is in a better situation than Tiger, then I suggest discussing these symptoms with your doctor at your next appointment. You may be prescribed Thorazine.

I saw Campbell hitting on the range at the Open at Bethpage Black. He hit the ball lower than any other pro on the range that day by a factor of two at least. I mean Trevino low, just line drive bullets. If that was a consistent feature of his game, it must have been difficult for him to compete in many modern course set-ups.

Anyway, he always seemed like a cool guy. With regard to Tiger, he got his own back at the U.S. Open a few years later -- one of a few Tiger really should have won.

Congratulations to tiger for beating a guy 15 Years ago, who announced his retirement a couple days ago.

Class move on both of their parts and very genuine. Best wishes to Cambo as he moves to another chapter in his life.
