You poor youngsters

you don't know what you missed
Just a short rant. One of my best experiences was growing up with forged irons in he 70s and 80s. Nothing is better than experiencing a round with old classic forged blades. It is an experience I won't forget and granted the new technology today allows me to play better, it just isn't quite the same!

Boy, you got that right Frankie. The good news is, if you're fortunate enough to get your hands on a great set of Miura forgings today, even in cavity backs, they feel is as good or better compared to the irons in those days.

I think the biggest diff is that back then the blades were exactly that...blades, and they were half the size of iron heads today. Remember the old "fluid feel" Staffs or the original McGregors? Remember how much every other shot you hit stung because there was almost no sweet spot? Yep, those were the days.

Thank God for technology.

My 1st real good set was Wilson staff FG-17. It was a huge deal for me to get a new set of forged and dump my wilson 1200 LTs

I still say if you want to know how good Nicklaus was in his prime, just try to hit a 67/68 VIP 1 or 2 iron.  One of the golf mags recently did a test with a scratch player trying to repeat a Nicklaus shot. It was pretty interesting.

OMG, this is like a walk down memeory lane. WIlson 1200 lts. A buddy of mine had those back in the 70s. God I loved my VIPs. Probably my all time favorites. Being a huge Nicklaus fan, of course, I carried mostly Mcgregor equipment. I even played the red tourney ball.

I would have loved to have played with those sorts of clubs. :idhitit: I often feel it's a shame club equipment has progressed as far as it has.

I'll never forget my 1st brand new set of forged blades, Walter Hagen Ultra with those metal ferrules in late 1970's. My favorite blades from old era are Wilson FG-17 & MacGregor Muirfields. Tiny sweetspot and a pure joy when struck well. Persimmon drivers are very nice and they look smaller than today's 3 woods.

My scores has improved with today's clubs though, too ridiculously easy to hit. You youngsters don't know what it's like to play with clubs with very tiny sweetspot and the harsh realities of long iron mishits in cold weather.

Best ever were the FG-17 and the Wilson Dynapower bulletback irons(69 model)

47577

Those Wilson bulletbacks had to be one of the softest buttery clubs when hit well. And this was waaay before anyone even heard of Miura. I still miss my old set. I played with Wilson Staff Tour Blades and Hogan Black Cameo Apex II's all through high school. Awesome feeling clubs and probably the last time the two brands made such coveted irons. Too bad I can't swing like I used to and make use of my old sticks. There was nothing like the pure feeling of those blades.

I won't even start on the feeling of a Macgregor persimmon driver. There is really no metal wood that can even compare to a well hit persimmon. I loved my old key hole inserts. The sound and feeling transferred to the user were the most pleasing things a person could experience. :idhitit:

Add to that playing with persimmon woods.  Just for fun I took an old Toney Penna driver to the range the other day and I can't believe I actually played with that thing.  I must have been a much better ball striker back then!  That puppy is small...

You've got more balls than I do. I picked up an old persimmon recently and just wondered how in the world I made contact with it! It would be fun to try to hit one of those again.

Try it, I took one of my old Hogan Apex persimmon driver to the range and made some of the youngsters that works at the club hit it. Almost none of them could hit it well and I did. I had forgetten how nice it felt on flush hits. Rather short as compared to today's drivers.

Wanna talk about old? I used to use Macgregor/Tourney CF4000's with the black faces :cheesy:

47408

I have a set of those also

47540

You still have them JC?

My dad sold mine to one of his friends :cheesy:

Yep. Still have them as well as too many others to mention. I'm a MB HO. Might have to put my Hogan cameos back in the bag after all this reminiscing. Or maybe the 88 redlines w/ square grooves. Or maybe the FG-17 or mp-29 and so on :cheesy:

:idhitit: Having not played MB's in a number of years I forgot how good they were. Maybe I need to try some again :pimp:

My first set of clubs was a set of Spaldings my mom picked up at a garge sale as joke for me. I treid them out in the back yard and it hurt so much to hit them that they sat there for 3 years untill my dad got tired of moving them around and threw them out. I didn't pick up a club for 20 years. Now i can't put them down, funny how things change.
