Looks Like Michelle is seeing sense

Please let this be true. Hopefully she can play well in the LPGA events she can play in and start to show us that she is going to fulfill the massive talent she has and become one of the greats to play our game.

Please let's not turn this into a bash fest on her.

I think this will be a move in the right direction for her. I also think that with a little more experience and wisdom, DL's prediction for 8 or 9 wins isn't really out of reach for her. I commend her for staying in school, and planning for college, also. Shows some responsibility and maturity on her part. She has the potential to influence golf, specifically womens golf, in somewhat of a way Tiger did for golf/ mens golf. For her age, she is showing a lot of positive role model qualities that often seem to get overshadowed by negatives i.e.-missing the cut in men's events, w/d'ing from men's events( with no shot of making the cut),etc.. When she gets more time to practice and compete, free from homework and other distractions teenagers have, and gains some much needed confidence while in competition, look out. It has seemed as though every time she has gotten on that path, she knocked herself/ got knocked off it by bad play in a mens event. Do I think in time she could make the cut in a PGA event? I think she could compete on Sunday, in time. That time just won't be in the next few years...

JMHO,

Jeff

Michelle Wie is a great talent, but I believe that she needs to prove to herself that she can win, win majors, and win comfortably on the LPGA before considering playing consistently in PGA events. The one problem she will have to learn to face, too, is that the PGA courses are so much longer then the LPGA courses and can be a factor to why she can't make the cut. She could be playing really good golf but the lessened scoring opportunities of a longer course make it considerably harder for her to make the cut and put in good scores. Can't wait to see her competing again on the LPGA - wisdom and age, learning to cope with Major contending pressure, teaches more then any men's event whilst she is a teen ever will.

If she is going to win 8-9 womens tournaments a year she is going to need to start making more putts. The slower LPGA greens may help. She may just be gun-shy from hacking out the PGA rough and 15 foot par putts.

Her ball striking and length will be an advantage on the womens tour, but she may just end up being a great ballstriker who is a average/below average putter in the mold of Sutton/Elkington/Allenby, etc. on the PGA tour. Solid pros who can't seem to get into the top level because there putting is suspect under pressure.

It's about time that Michelle, her parents and management team have made the correct decision to concentrate solely on the LPGA Tour!! As for 8-9 wins in a season...she has to prove that she can win first. She has tremendous talent & possibly could contend in the events later this year. I wish her luck in her endeavors.

answer this question, what is the percentage of players on either tour (pga or lpga) that actually win one tournament in their entire pro career? now, being in her second year as a pro how many top 5 finishes does she have in lpga majors? at least a 4 i think. plus, she is only allowed to play in 6 or so lpga tournaments a year until she gets her lpga status. could she get her "first" win if she were to play a full schedule? easily. if we are going to bash pro's for making too much money without ever winning we can start with many players on the pga tour that just play to make cuts. it's not a bad living just making cuts, and getting sponsorship $$ is a bonus. :friends: give her time, it took some great players a few years before they started winning.

Excellent. Now we all can see if she is really worth the $20 million a year.

I wonder how much of that 20 Mil nike gave her played into the decision of her just playing the LPGA? Quite sure the big boys at Nike told her she needed to cowboy up, and start give us a return on investment (ROI) :friends: to the big time MW

I agree she needs to concentrate on the LPGA and prove that she can win before branching out to other tours. I really don't what the logic has been in her playing on the PGA when she always has such poor results. I don't think she has done any favours to the LPGA or the general cause of women in golf or indeed her own development by persisting in playing with the men.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wasn't Wie capped as to how many she could play on the LPGA, since she was a non-member?

I think it was good for her to play as much as possible and to experience the gap between her game and best competition she could find (various men's tours and the LPGA).

I probably would have laughed my *ss off if Leadbetter had said, "We've decided to focus on the LPGA and start with 1 win, then move onto 2."
