Old course.

I want to see if I can play around at the old course tomorrow. I hear if you go in early they might fit you in? Is this reasonable. I am in Scotland with my family for 2 days and want to play some golf. What's my best bet? Thanks

Yes. Show up early. I usually go about 6:00 and they will fit you in. You might want to ask someone how early the line is forming this week. Bring your handicap card. I have only been asked for it a couple time in twenty or so rounds but you don't want this to be the time.

Just realized that this might be the autumn meeting for the R&A in which case you may be out of luck.

Anyone know what time I should show up? And we're to park? And if I can't get on the the old course will they let me the new as a single?

The Closest parking for the old course is on Golf Place road just across the street from the R&A and just north of the Golf Museum. Bring 5 pounds in coins to pay for the parking, which will cover you for the entire day.

Then make you way to the Old Course Pavilion (not the starter shack), if you are arriving after Midnight you won't be the first person in line so talk to the other guys in line and find out what number in line you are. Generally an actual line either doesn't form or last for very long, as people tend to huddle in groups chatting about golf. Then you all will arrange yourself into a line just before 6am when the "line czar" shows up. He will take your name and your handicap information, and you will be left waiting around. How early you play depends on what time you are there. Even though its the old course there are always cancelations, but if you show up at 6am you might not get out until 3pm, so I've found showing up as early as possible, and getting out early is more time effective.

Show up anytime you feel like it, just don't expect to be the third person in line if you show up at 5:45. If its your first time and you don't feel like being there at midnight, but you want to be sure you get a chance to play maybe try 3:30am or 4am. Really its your call, and its all luck of the draw. The amount of open spots as well as cancelations vary so no answer is the best answer.

Bring warm clothing, a snack, a chair or something to sit on if your smart and hunker down. The pavilion also now has free wifi, so thats pretty cool.

Thanks I am about 20 mins away thinking about leaving around 430. Now i need to rent clubs and do not have my HC card. How much is that going to hurt me?

Renting clubs is no big deal you just tell the guy who takes your name down and he'll have someone sort that for you. The handicap card is a different issue. I've seen them tell people not to worry about it, but I've heard if them turning people down. Once again it's your call. You will have some time before when they take your name down and when you play to figure out your handicap info if that's something you can do. You can also show them your handicap info on your phone if you can get it.

Played the new course this morning. Beautiful loved every min or it. Shot 83 and left some birdies out there but loved putting on the greens but chipping needed to work on since the ball does not stop ha ha
