I just wanted to hear some thoughts on what Tigers handicap might be.  I was thinking +6 or +7. Any other guesses out there??? :idhitit:

Golf Digest about 2 years ago had TW in tournament rounds with like a +8.

Funny story was Chris DiMarco was asked his handicap in a pro-am and he chuckled, looked at the guy and said... uhh, about a 3!

I calculated his last 20 rounds (not counting President's Cup) and adjusted up for the two courses that played as par 70's instead of 72.

TW came out as a +7.3. But as someone mentioned earlier, that's with PGA Tour conditions. Slope/rating can only take so much into consideration.

Just as a comparison, I ran the numbers with the same slope/ratings as if only scores of 85 were posted. 13 over par on average, yet the index would come out as -7.4

I suppose it would be about +5, i mean that doesnt sound alot but he plays on golf courses that any non pro golfer would struggle to get within 5 strokes of there handicap. :idhitit: Tiger around any normal golf course would rip it up!!

If someone would struggle to get within 5 of their handicap then they are not using a true handicap. Slope and rating on a 'normal' course would be much less than that of a PGA tour course thus Tiger would 'rip it up' as long as he shot to his handicap.

The handicap system is there to give a true indication of skill not a false impression!

I disagree. I think the fairways on the tour courses are quite forgiving, meaning wide. Some of the muni's I play on have very narrow fairways, (like 25 to 30 yards) with plenty of hazards to either side. A friend I often play with joke about how some of the pro's would have a kaniption fit if they had to play some of the courses we play. The lost balls and penalty strokes would surely ignite some tempers.

Too bad they don't pick a random muni course to play at least once a year to test that theory.

That's not true. The USGA set up the handicap system so that your index represents your potential, not the score you would most likely shoot. It is estimated by the USGA that you should hit your index about 25% of the time. If you are off by 5 shots, that's not a big deal, just not such a good round. If you are hitting your index much more often that 25%, your index must go down because at that point you are not playing your true index, you are sandbagging.

Could of fooled me. The only thing the USGA's hadicaping system is good for is false impressions and sandbagging - and until they adopt something like the UK, it'll continue to do so.

DM is right, you should only shot your 'handicap' 1 out of 4 times. You handicap represents your best rounds, not your average.

Take note of some of the private amateur leagues out there. The winners are consistently at -1 or -2 net, not the -10+ you see from standard USGA amateur events. The private leagues are able to keep accurate handicaps which weed out the sandbaggers. The fact that the winners are always at just 1 or 2 under is evidence that those playing with an accurate handicap, and play well, will only shoot a few under par net - therefore its not a judge of your average score, but your projected score on your best days.

Wouldn't he have a negitave handicap because of him under par rounds?

50051[/snapback]

No. Typical above-par handicaps are just #, the number itself. Once you start shooting under part, it's +#

well, think of his best 10 rounds out of his last 20...each is probably 6 under par or better (throw in a 62 here and there)

this is just counting his rounds on tour, on courses he is not familiar with

then, you have to factor in the fact that the course rating for the courses he plays are extremely difficult with slopes all above 150 probably

so I would say around +10 or +9 hanidcap would be right

If you think of the top amateurs being around +4/+5 or so, the middle of the range tour pros are better than them for the most part. So let's say they're around +6. In 60th place in scoring average on the PGA Tour is Jesper Parnevik with 70.74, so say he's +6 with that. Tiger's is 68.66, so two shots a round better. That's a +8 and I'd say that's on the conservative side. In 2000, his scoring average was 67.79 so more like +9.

My guess is if he was playing same rules and courses as the rest of us, he'd be +10.

I think handicaps stop at +9. Would need a whole new set of rules.

So is 14.5 handicap good for 6 months of playing golf?

Yes, there are people that play for years at private clubs with access to very good teaching pros and never achieve a 14.5.

Work on the short game and putting and your iron play and you will get to single digits very fast...

Indeed. Missing the green doesn't hurt when you get can get it up&down. Practice pitching, putting, chipping, sand, flop shots, everything you can hit inside of 50yards. *don't work the flop shots in until you start working on your distance control by practicing* I tried to in a company tournament & flopped the ball right into the water on the other side of the green. I think I was just trying to show off

Not exactly. The handicap system measures a player's potential. Statistically, a player plays to his handicap or better 1 out of every 4 rounds.
