Oversized Ball Markers

Older guy i paired with at the muny the other day had a "Shiner Bock" (Texas Beer Brewing Co.) ball marker and asked him where he got it.

He told me he made it himself by snagging a one inch punch from the hardware store and stamping it out of a beer bottle cap.

It was the perfect size and super thin, the cost of the punch was cheap and there are some really cool looking beer caps out there. I suggest doing this, you can make tons for the low price of a hangover and be totally unique.

 

EDIT: I just saw an "Arnold Palmer Half & Half" bottle cap complete with umbrella if you're on the wagon

Couldn't bother me less what you use, if it's for money I'd politely ask you to move the flattest of markers,

 

But I'd bet anyone a drink I can pick on the first tee who's gonna use a poker chip lol

In tournaments there is not much worse than having a playing partner who uses a giant poker chip. But on the other hand, it may not be a bad thing to use for you to use knowing that its eventually gonna annoy the hell outta your competitors

I also believe it's not against any rule to use one..........I use it because it's easier for me to see than a small coin.

Odd/interesting items I've seen marking a ball:

 

Watch bezel

Hockey puck shaved to 1/8th thickness (I play with a lot of hockey guys)

Old eyeglass

Dog tag, not the military kind, an actual dog tag from Petco from the guys dog who passed

Shark tooth

Shotgun brass

I remember as A kid I worked at Heatherwood golf course Setauket Long Island,there was a regular foursome we called the Gangsters,who always played for big money( which is funny because as you LI guys know it's a tiny easy little executive course) but one guy is complaining he can't see the others marker. So he proceeds to mark his ball the rest of the round with his wallet.

Some people have a dislike for poker chips as markers, and I suspect it comes from the the people they play with. Like tjetski mentioned- it can be distracting to have a large marker close to your line. Same applies to the guy who leaves his ball close to your line. A little courtesy for others is in order - carry two markers. A large one for when you're away and a small one for when you're neared other players ball or line.

 

I use a WRX poker chip (available on this site) and a penny. My marker will never be a distraction to you, and if it bothers you that I use it I suspect you would be bothered by someone's ball retriever or iron headcovers too.

I couldn't care less what anyone would use to mark their ball. But!! the reality is the player is going to be asked many more times to move his marker especially when longish putts are near the same line. Then the process of replacing the mark. I like to play fast golf and anything that helps I'm in favor of!

Not to mention the ball retriever and iron covers. That's a sure sign of 5.5/6 hour round. Just saying ?

That's a great idea. A guy I played with last week fumbled around in his pockets for five minute and came out with a condom for a marker.

Hell back in the old day lots of us in the daily game marked our balls with beer cans.

It took me 20 minutes to find this threat, but I had to go back to it ... especially to apologize to Sawgrass :)

 

I now agree, "larger ball markers" are sometimes necessary.

 

I was in Florida for 2 weeks this month and the combination of low winter sun and the color of the grass, made it almost impossible to find a small ball marker.

 

So ignore everything I said previously, it was temporary insanity. Unless you're very close to someone's line or very close to the hole, "large ball markers" are sometimes necessary, especially for us Seniors.

I'm going to go with this one, which is actually 2 different sizes ... you can "remove" the smaller, center marker.
