I could hit a ping pong ball on a string with the tip of a sword while lunging, so I can't figure out why I don't pure the ball very often...

Probably because you hit that ping pong ball without thinking about it. You know what you want to do and you just do it.

 

What other sport is taught in such a way that one needs six conscious thoughts in two seconds? A lot of modern golf instruction stems from the Bobby Jones films of the early 1930s. But when you read about how those were made, it is said that Jones watched a lot of film and determined his commentary from it. He freely admitted he had never thought of ANY of what he said about his swing on film when he was playing.

 

If you ever get a chance you should read AJ Bonar's book. I had a chance to watch the video that he sold for years on The Golf Channel and got nothing out of it, but the book is a very interesting read. His approach to hitting the ball and playing the game is unlike anything I've seen anywhere else.

One of Fred Shoemaker's drills is to have people putt balls that he rolls towards them. He thinks you can learn something useful by hitting shots in a much more reactive mode.

 

I always felt you must do something for your hand-eye co-ordination by bouncing and juggling balls with a wedge.

 

Can't be any worse for you than trapping a space hopper between your knees or trying to play in a jacket which has the sleeves stitched to the pockets.

AJ's action versus reaction, every other sport involves timing and hand/eye coordination. The little home run. Who was your ping pong instructor.

His approach can certainly free up the paralysis by analysis syndrome.

I got that video some years ago at the thrift store actually I like it it is the only swing instruction video I have ever watched except Stockton on putting

On memorial day I was hitting more pure than probably ever. Couldn't believe what was happening with the ball. My clubs are decades old so unfortunately there's no evidence of hitting the sweet spot other than the flight. (Seemed to have more to do with my feet than anything else, by the way).
