The IDEAL will always be a Trackman AND the ball marker test combined...
IF Face to path is 0*, the tilt on the spin axis 0* Lie angle is 100% neutral
If face to path is 1*, the tilt on the spin axis is 3* Lie angle is 100% neutral
If face to path is 2*, the tilt on the spin axis is 6* Lie angle is 100% neutral
If face to path is 2*, the tilt on the spin axis is 7.5* Lie angle is 0.5* off neutral

Just came across this reading other posts and just wanted to compare my recent trackman number to the relationship you stated above.

So in my longer irons (4-6i) I am getting a face to path/spin axis ratio of 1:2.5 which equates to a lie angle being off <.25* which is negligible since you cannot even bend with that kind of precision right?

However, as it goes down the set that ratio get progressively smaller the lowest being like 1:1.7. With that being said that still equates to <0.5* is it worth bending for less than half a degree? Can bending machine be precise to a half a degree?

Thanks

At that point it would be hardly significant if you aren't missing them consistenty one way. If anything, it would be more visual if you are sensitive to it.

Oh I don’t have any issues with unexplained misses one way. I play a draw naturally since my path is in to out thus having a negative face to path normally. It was just more of a curiosity.

Its not easy to get lie angles better than +/- 0.25*, and we are now down at a level where your own varables to face angle will have a larger influence on ball flight, than the lie angle will, so if they are BETTER than 0.5 off, just leave it like that

@Howard_Jones Can you explain why the straight line test is 10:1 and not 1:1?  I cannot figure it out for the life of me.  TYIA

Its a result of what we actually measure

Here you see 2 scenarios - the Label / pen will print the angled line, but what we actually measure, is the WIDE on the bottom of a triangle....

Look again and you see The lie board system moved from sole to face, plus changed with minus....

Instead of the labels, we could have used triangles like this:
and again, its really the distance from center and out where impact was made we measure.

image.png.193bf0b6abd4a71931a2916ab195294d.png

Bottom Wide 1/8" = 0.5* Lie
Bottom wide 2/8" = 1.0*
Bottom wide 3/8" = 1.5*
Bottom wide 4/8" = 2.0*
Bottom wide 5/8" = 2.5*
Bottom wide 6/8" = 3.0*

When the measure box is 1 x 1 inch, the diagonal line change by 10* for each 2/8" wider we go
