My first wedge grind!

Turned out pretty well

I've never been a big user of 60* wedges, mostly because I've never really liked the feel of the bounce that comes on most wedges. In the back of my mind I've always wanted to try and do my own custom grind, but I was waiting for the perfect used club to come through the store that I could use as my test subject. Last week that club came in - a near perfect chrome Tour Action 588 60* wedge for $20!

So off to the grinder I went. My inspiration was a picture I saw of a Bob Vokey tour wedge on GolfWRX. In fact, here's the exact pic I was aiming for:



Below are the pics of my grind thus far. I spent a good 30 mins or so grinding the bounce down, and it turned out pretty well. I did a quick pass on the buffer to try and even things out, and although it still needs a little bit of work, here it is:

Nice grind!! I have tried to grind wedges before, and they haven't looked as good as that, keep up the goood work, you will only get better!!!!!

Do you have a bounce target in mind? I've used some of the low bounce options 4-5 in stores before and been pretty happy but I agree that less is better on a lob wedge.

I'm really just eyeballing it. This one is right about where I want it to be, it just needs a little bit of tweaking to clean up the lines. Aside from that, it sits almost flust to the ground at impact, which is exactly what I want. :cheesy:

Nice grind. I'm really surprised that more people don't try this on their own...it really is pretty simple, particularly if you are just looking for heel/toe relief. I've done five or six of my own wedges and have been very happy with the results each time. Just have to keep in mind that it's far better to grind too little and have to come back and hit it again than to take too much!!! :shok:

To be honest, I can hardly ever notice any difference in swingweight. In fact, I have no clue what any of my clubs are on the swingweight scale, and I don't even care...hahaha

 

If, by chance, I somehow notice that it's lighter, then maybe I'll toss some lead tape on there...but my guess is that I'll just bag it & play with it :cheesy:

I'd give you props on that. Nice work. My first one looked terrible in comparison. Since then, I am a lot better.

congrats dude. Looks like a find job to me. Hard to get the esthetic refinement that artisans like JoeK, Chip Usher, B Vokey, etc but the functionality is what will win you over in the end.

 

I'm playing my ground Scratch SFU and absolutely could not be happier with the playability. I took the safe route and used a coarse 42"x1" Scotchbrite belt. Takes off metal slowly so is fairly forgiving. It doesn't have that 'cut' look that the Kwokmeister provides but unless you can cut it perfectly, it's going to look sloppy.
