Well with the new list out thought it would be fun to have a discussion about it. I have a few takes but I'll withhold them for a bit

So I guess the Cabot courses are pretty good. Glen abbey really plummeted.

 

Looking at the BC courses, interesting to see Tobiano drop so far, and for Gallaghers Canyon to show up all of a sudden at 49. I haven't played hardly any Canadian courses outside BC so can't judge relative positions, but those are two big changes.

 

And not a single Manitoba course? Ouch.

Part of the rating is based on location. Apparently all the Manitoba courses lost 10,000 points for being in Manitoba.

What's up with the 20 min section in the middle just on telling us about that Glen Abbey might get turned into houses. Like who really cares, maybe actually talk about the other top courses instead. Maybe I just miss the Canadian open at Shaughnessy, just amazing to see them up close at that course. This Jason Logan guy also seems so boring compared to good ol Bob Weeks. Kind of like going with Strombo on hockey night in Canada. What a disaster.

 

The rankings always seem to be skewed to the center of the universe which is back east, but having the two Cabot ones near the top there must mean they are truly special and worth a trip one day. Im also surprised to see Greywolf so high up there. I really need to take a trip to that Invermere area.

I am being cynical here but it seems to me that the top 10 to 15 is probably legit and the remainder is a reflection of how much advertising dollars are flowing back via either the TV show or other forms of print media.

 

I have proof just a feeling.

 

It is really a shame that Golf Canada cannot get its act together to afford the shipping cost of getting all the equipment to run the men's Canadian Open to all parts of Canada instead of just playing in Ontario. How is that a national Open?

Close. It's about comps to the raters. Heard from a GM that at a course he used to work at, he comped nearly triple digit rounds for raters, and they went into the 70s after not being ranked. The next time around he didn't comp, and the course did not make the list. I would think the big moves people mentioned above are related.

 

But of course they will tell you they do not look, accept, nor factor comps into their ratings.

 

The Canadian Open has been brought elsewhere, several times in the last decade in a half, and has taken a bath each time. Golf Canada doesn't have the money to hold it somewhere where it won't bring in money. The more they got told to behave like a business, the more they have to, and no business would voluntarily turn down making money in the GTA to lose it elsewhere in the country.

Having played a number of the top 100 within BC and just today getting out to Greywolf for the first time, I feel like top 20 is selling it a little too highly. It is a very well designed course, in very good shape, and the customer experience was entirely positive. That said, I'd rank it somewhere in the spectrum between the Ridge at Predator Ridge (which I likewise feel is ranked too highly) and Chateau Whistler (which I feel is ranked a little low). It was a great round of golf, I'm glad I made the trip and i'll likely make a point of returning sometime, but it's not on the level of a Capilano or Shaugnessy.

Thanks for the review 1putt. Always wanted to play greywolf but have never made it there. Definitely on the list.
