Most forgiving iron with thin topline and no offset?

Recommended Posts

I have a set of Taylormade 2010 Burner TP's. These have very low offset and some forgiveness. Blade like short irons with pocket cavity mid and long irons. First time out with these I shot a 46 front nine and a 34 back nine. Like any good Ho, I put these in the closet for future testing..... Might be time to try them again:)

Here is a review I found on them.

The iron is quite stunning in real life, small compact, thin top line and very little offset. It makes the R9 Japan (R9 TP in the US) look larger and rounder. The Burner TP has athletic sharper looking lines and is very pleasing to the eye at address. I actually did not expect the top line to be this thin after spending time with the R9 late last year. The smoked finish looks great with the red shaft.

Looks aside I know everyone wants to know how this iron feels. First let me say that I have NOT been a fan of TM cast irons in the past. I have preferred their forged models like the r7 Forged and the current Burner Forged, both which feel very soft. I m glad to report that pured shots with the Burner TP are indeed buttery soft for a soft cast iron. Though I do not usually play stiff flex, these shafts were a very smooth combo with the Burner TP. A easy relaxed swing produced very smooth feel and buttery pure contact and the type of soft sound on impact you typically get with a forged iron. Though the Burner has a pocket style cavity design, there is no click to it in my opinion.

While compact players irons like these are not usually forgiving for the average golfer, I was surprised I could hit these rather well. They are obviously not the most forgiving irons nor are they meant to be but they definitely did not feel terrible on mis hits low on the face or towards the heel or toe. I believe the shaft itself may have contributed a lot to the feel so I have to say props to TM Japan for actually offering the Burner TP with Shino-chan’s prototype shafts.Workability is very good with these irons as even I could hit a draw and fade with these irons which made me begin to think I should have these in the bag. (a draw for me was easier than a fade once again probably thanks to the graphite). As my fifteen minutes passed and I got back to testing the new Legacy Tour drivers, I began to understand why demand for these Burner TP’s have been so high. Based onintial impressions they seem to be a pretty darn good iron… so who wants dibs on my set after I get it. (^_^)

Most recommendations that have been given you shot down immediately.......If you want something more forgiving, then obviously a thin topline like you have had in the past does not inspire confidence in your swing. Why so picky on a thin top line if you want forgiveness to make your game better? If your game needs a little help why ignore the tech that can help it? If it is more important to look the part than actuall play the part, then why not just stick to blades to look like a player? Because people have given great recommendations on player style clubs.

Asking for forgiveness but wanting a thinner topline than CF or something like P790 is going to really be splitting hairs, especially if you want "no offset". Almost all forgiving clubs will have offset because it sets the head CG back further away from shaftline which essentially adds forgiveness. You can pick 2 of those 3 things you want.

You're asking to find a g/f who's good in bed, smart/sane and wealthy. Pick 2.

I think something like Z785's or P760's are going to be the closest you'll get. Maybe AP1/T100 as well.

From what I have tried:

The 2018/2019 Cobra CBs got more forgiving with the additional tungsten in the sole compared to the 2015/2016 version IMO. I am a 7 hc and have loved my full CB set since day 1.

My set before the Cobras was the Ping iE1 and I was hoping/expecting to fit into the iBlades at the time, but they didn't agree with my swing. They do seem to be right in the sweet spot for this topic though.

I thought the 618 CBs were more forgiving than the 620s, but that was with limited play, YMMV.

I did a 2 week trial with the Ft Worth Blacks and loved the feel, but I found them to be more punishing on thin and toe hits than the Cobra CBs.
