Posted this in the Mid-Atlantic forum but didn't get too many responses. Guessing more Ohio guys post on this site anyway...

Gonna be staying at Olgebay next week and have time for one round. What is the better course; layout, conditions, fun factor, etc? Thanks.

I liked the Palmer course better than the Jones. It's more open and scoreable

Palmer course is newer and easily the better of the two IMO; it's also typically in better shape and the layout is far less quirky compared to the Jones course.

Both courses' greens may give you fits, it takes a while to figure out how to factor in the terrain surrounding the green rather than just the immediate topography of the green itself. The Palmer has more subtlety in this regard, as the slopes on some of the Jones' greens are extreme. I recall a few years back on 17, my buddy had ~50 yards to a front-right pin that was tucked right behind a greenside bunker. He blades the shot, it skips on the green a few times before rolling off the back and up the hill behind the green, at which point it starts rolling back onto the green, and eventually 50 more feet... right back into the hole. There are a few holes where you absolutely can NOT be above the hole.

Between that kind of stuff and figuring out the routing and bounces, you'll pick up at least a couple shots upon replaying both layouts (especially the Jones). I recommend playing both, but favor the Palmer, and be prepared to get some bad bounces on the Jones. :derisive:

EDIT: Oops, just saw you only had time for one round. In that case, Palmer all the way.

Is there anywhere to eat/drink around there?? Wondering if it would be a good spot for a quick weekend trip???

There is a small overpriced restaurant onsite, but better options are a few miles away.

Wheeling Island casino is about 10 minutes down the road with a few restaurants, including a buffet, fairly decent steakhouse and a casual restaurant.

We found a decent Italian restaurant very close to the casino, but I can't remember the name, maybe some locals could chime in.
