Hardest rating/slope you've ever played?

yesterday I had a tournament... oh man!
Hey guys

Yesterday I played in a tournament in Rochester Hills, MI at the Wyndgate (Eastwynd course). I looked at the scorecard- my god! It was a tough course, the toughest I've played, but you should have seen it. 7398 from the tips, 77.1/150. Holy crap! We weren't playing from the tips, we played it at about 6500 yards, which was PLENTY on that course. I'm not too familiar with many tough courses, so how do those ratings compare? I remember hearing somewhere that Oakmont is 78-ish and 150-ish... that's impressive that this course was almost as tough as Oakmont if what I heard was accurate. I played with a guy who is a member at Oakland Hills in Michigan and he said that it's tougher than Oakland Hills. That impressed me. I fired a score that I wasn't particularly proud of, but it got me a T8 finish... the damn thing is that I didn't even play badly, I played well almost all day and couldn't even break 80.

I'm curious, do those ratings seem tough or is this a fairly common kind of rating for courses?

Here are the stats on my course. It was recently rated the "hardest" course in the greater Atlanta area:

The Georgia Tech Club

Black: 7558 yards/77.8/154

Gold: 7076 yards/74.9/150

Blue: 6552 yards/71.9/139

White: 6025 yards/70.0/129

Red: Ladies

The Black tees are for collegiate tournaments, and are not usually set up to play. Not to mention how fast the greens are!

I played the back tees here a couple years ago. Absolutely hated it.

http://www.traditionalclubs.com/view.asp?i...6&page=9231

7300+ yards

76.5 rating

147 slope

It's markets itself as a true Irish links course. If you ask me, it was a bunch of marsh land and hills with a few patches of grass here and there.

Two of the courses I usually play are 6900 yards, 74.8 and 142 slope and the other is 7200 yards, 74.4, and 142 slope.

Back when I was a club pro in New England I played at The International, in Bolton MA. I played it once from the tips and once from the "tournament tees" which are much better than the "tiger" tees, by almost 1100 yards. Shot 79 and 83 from the Tiger tees, and felt like I was 5 under...The low round for the tournament was 75. Super hard course...they even have a par 6 at over 700 yards!!!!! :)

Here are the stats.

The International - Pines Course Tiger Tees

Length - 8,325

Course Rating - 80.0

Slope - 154

Driver: TM M4 Tour Issue
3W: Rogue
Hybrid: TEE
Irons: Callaway Apex Pro

I played in a best ball at Wyndgate last Monday. Played from middle tees (around 6400 or 6500 yds.). Shot 42/34. Finished birdie/eagle. Kind of a trick course with some goofy holes (I hit a frickin' hybrid off the tee on one of the par 5's dead straight through the fairway and into the hazard!) Tough course if you've not played it before due to severe elevation changes and some blind shots. It was the first time I'd played there. I think Shepherd's Hollow and Fieldstone are tougher tracks (and better designs) in SE lower Michigan.

One of the toughest I've played is Montour Heights in Coraopolis, PA. The course rating is 75 and it has a slope rating of 140. I've played a few courses with higher slopes like Miurfield Village, & Tartan Fields but this was the toughest. I think Golf or Golf Digest listed this as one of the toughest courses in America in the last year.

i played a course on oahu called ko'olau

when i played there the slope rating was 167, even tho the max is 155

twas challenging

I played there too! If you learned real quick you can actually play that course with 3 wood if you can carry it 250. I figured that out after the first hole! The thing that hurt me on that course was the slow greens. They were rolling slower than molasses in january. Fun course either than that.

Every summer we have 8 guys go to La Quinta for 4 days of golf and we ALWAYS have at least one round from the tips at PGA West Stadium. 7266 yds/75.9/150. Best round '81'

I have also play Redhawk in Temecula, Ca a few times a year which is 75.7/149 from the tips. Best round '78'

Gotta love #6 at the Stadium Course....255 yd Par 3...water right the whole way. I do the same thing every year at PGA West, and we have a few real hackers. Its a blood bath. Although a couple of the hackers bring collapsible fishing poles in their bags and always catch a couple nice bass with lures.

ps- those greens are awful in summer. The parking lot is softer.

Our group always plays property line on any course we play.

We play Split Rail Links & GC at 7353 / 76.2 / 138 probably the most.

I think the hardest we have come across so far is Atchafalaya at Idlewild at 7,533 / 77.6 / 144.

IMO and experiences course rating is a better indicator of difficulty compared to slope.

Hey Ditty, you were playing right across the street from my house! I have yet to play Wyndgate (which is the private side of the 36 holes), but used to frequent WestWynd quite regularly until they burned out their greens last year. I believe WestWynd is the hardest course in the area by FAR. Some of the most punishing fairway bunkers and regular rough I've seen, not to mention the heather which is in play on probably 13 or 14 holes.

I've always scored well at Shepherd's. The fairways are pretty generous. I think elevation and the rolling fairways with never a flat lie throw most people.

I agree Fieldstone is very tough. Probably why they had the Buick Open qualifier there.

I really like this course but many guys just hate it, Royal New Kent from the Invicta Tee is a beast. This course is tough regardless of the tee but I shot 76 from the Invicta and it might have been one of the best rounds I have ever shot.

I've never really played golf except in Alabama and Georgia. The toughest I've played so far... and I've played a boat load of courses in these two states, would be Silver Lakes, the Anniston stop on the Robert Trent Jones trail in Alabama. It's a collection of 3 9 hole courses but they are seriously challenging for me... I never seem to shoot well there always breaking into the 90's it seems like... with a low of 84 one weekend from the Orange tees.
