January In Atlanta

This is a first for me....My wife has a business trip and I am being invited along as the "spouse." Usually the other way around, but I like it. While she is in meetings all day I hope to be out playing my first golf in Atlanta. Provided of course that there is golf in the Atlanta area in January. It may sound very naive, but I'm from Wisconsin. So, what might I expect?

Could be mid 60's sunny and beautiful. Could be low 30's and rainy/sleet and an outside chance of snow. And there is a very good chance it could be both in the same day.

 

May as well bring the clubs down. Golf is available year round here, it honestly just depends on what the weather is that day. That said, being from Wisconsin, you will probably be able to handle a sunny 45 degree better than those of us who are from here.

Thank you trippster. You answered the crux of my question....Golf is a year round game in Atlanta, but conditions can be day by day. Cool. I will pack the clubs when the time comes around.

As trippster said, weather can be variable. I have played in a short sleeve shirt in January. The one thing I would add is that there is a higher chance that the course will be cart path only. With the elevation changes most courses have, walking is more challenging here than is the Midwest.

I don't know about short sleeves (I'm from Atlanta so I respect the cold, LOL), but I agree with the other comments about being able to play in January. You honestly get to play more days in January than you might in February here in Atlanta. My birthday is in mid-January and I've only been able to play ONCE on my birthday, HOWEVER, there have been plenty of days before and after my birthday that have been "warm enough" to play.

As others have said, courses are open year round. One thing to add - can get quite wet down here that time of year. Even if there's no rain for a day or two courses have a tough time drying out in the winter.

 

And I'll second the hilly nature of courses...nothing is flat down here when you get away from the coast. Something non-locals don't normally equate to the Southeast.

It'll be wet for sure. The only month of the year that's a toss up for golf is FEB.

 

It could be 60's or 30's in January.. In the SAME WEEK.

Yep, it was a fairly ugly weekend. I was thinking of at least some range time but it would have been pretty soggy.

Not trying to Hijack thread but what is the weather end of March? I posted about golf courses and their conditions but now wondering based on comments the type of weather we could see. Rain, dry a combo of both, Temp's...etc.

March can be anything. I have played where it was in the 30's and 40's with a wind chill and snow flakes coming down. I have played when it was in the 70's and not a cloud in the sky. I have cancelled tee times because of severe thunderstorms and potential tornadoes. That is a transition period between winter and spring so you have to be prepared all types of weather.

TM hit it with the transition period. It can be any of those, but late March most likely will be a cool morning mid 40's/low 50's and warming up to high 60's/low 70's. With that said, it's been a weird winter here, so who knows what the spring will bring.

It will most likely be high of 60-70, low of 30-50.

 

Rain is coin flip. Very very small chance of nasty weather (i.e. Snow/sleet/ice).

Went to Masters one year on Monday, camped and swam in lake that day, it snowed in Atlanta that following Friday.
