Tour Players Iron Lie Angles

I find that my swing plane changes with the length of the club. Using 62*/5 iron as standard, I play my long irons standard, my mid irons 1* flat and my 9,PW, GW and SW 2* flat. This change really helped me straighten out my short irons, which I tended to pull left.

 

 

 

I don't know if my swing plane changes but I am very similar. I'm 1* up in 3,4....standard in 5-9...1* flat in PW and 2* flat in 50,54,58.

Haha yeah I saw it was old but I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Ive experimented with every lie angle imaginable and I thought it was a good learning experience. I think you can learn a lot adapting to a flat club and an upright club. I actually play Single Length irons now which to me is a huge advantage because you just have to get it right with 1 club and you've got them all figured out vs having to dynamically fit all your irons individually.

I'd say most tour players play upright lie, mainly because they are taller? Not sure.

Tour players generally have flatter lies than amateurs because they have a more shallow approach into the ball....That's why someone like Ernie only has 1* upright when an amateur would be 3 or 4 up....I am 6'3 with short legs (31" inseam) and shorter arms for my height and was previously fit for 4* up......Now that I changed my swing to be more on plane and more shallow coming into the ball, I could play standard lies. How you attack the ball matters more than static measurements.....The only thing static measurements will do is match your lie to what it should be at address based on a standard universal setup position, which again is going to vary by the player. It's how the club is "sitting" at impact that matters....Sure, your measurements will affect how your body moves, but your own personal sequence and swing shape change it more.

I remember an article about Darren Clarke where it said his longer irons were about 1-2' up and lower ones about the same flat. Something about the flatter lies promoted a fade and a softer landing into a green

I was fitted and was told I needed my clubs 3 degrees upright and .5 inch longer and regular flex. I play Ping black dot irons with stiff flex and hit the ball perfectly straight.
