Ben Hogan Drivers, Woods, ect.

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start a new thread. I have not come across a topic discussing Hogan drivers or woods. I recently picked up a 1981-1982 Ben Hogan driver with a Vector 5 shaft. Its a spectacular club, totally 100 percent mint. I love the pear shape head. The head resembles a early 1950s MacGregor Ben Hogan model, even a 1954 M85. Later I'll post face profile pics.

Freddie-

The one on the right is a MacGregor Ben Hogan Signature Driver with 5 screw insert prior to and including 1953.

The documented conversations between Ben Hogan and MacGregor execs as well as Toney Penna at the 1953 Masters Tournament pretty much end Hogan's association with MacGregor that "Triple Crown" year, so 1954 might be stretching it for the MacGregor/Hogan relationship.

That's why the Driver on the left is a decal on the crown, and not a signature stamp (maybe MacGregor kept those?)

Nonetheless....Beautiful Drivers.... the 5 screw (domino pattern) is so timeless...

Will gladly watch this thread...

Perhaps a LH MacGregor Ben Hogan Driver might appear...

I thought I would add one more post for the day. Here is my Hogan 2-Iron collection stemming all the way back to the Precision model. This was fun to put together and when I found this awesome display unit with Mr. hogan hitting his famous 1-Iron at Marion, well that was the icing on the cake for me. Likely I am going to do all 1-Irons here next so as to be more in context with the picture on the display.

Which Hogan model is your favorite?

Some time ago I picked up a 3 club set of 1949-51 Mens R/H MacGregor "Ben Hogan" Speedwood "ParMaster" laminated Maple woods - Model 1552. They have a,"cross-hatch" club face pattern. The Kaplan/MacGregor book writes that the driver is a deep-face and compact and was developed for the low handicap player and long hitter.

The spoon had a broken hosel just below the whipping cover, that required some repair and on the bottom of the driver club head at the toe, there was a small piece Maple lamination missing. I cleaned up the faces a bit with some 600 grit sandpaper. Two of the shaft flex labels are missing but each club still has their original brown calf skin leather wrap grips and shaft end caps.

Wriggles-

To my knowledge, the Ben Hogan Golf Company did NOT make any LH persimmon woods, only laminated models.

However, MacGregor made a few Ben Hogan signature persimmon woods from 1940-1953....

Perhaps you've seen this photo of a MacGregor Ben Hogan Bantam Persimmon wood set-1,2,3,4...

...and yes, that's my foot.

Per Kaplan, the MacGregor Ben Hogan Speedwoods are listed as early as the 1949 MacGregor Catalog.

Here is my six screw that I just picked up. It was re-shafted with a True Temper Dynamic stiff @ 43 1/2 in. Played with it today from the 6000yd tees and had no problem with length nothing but irons into par 4s. Par 5s and short par 4s used 3,4,5 wood depending on distance. Don't know why but these clubs feel great and perform even better. Probably the weight of the lumber. I also never thought shafts would make a big diff but the 6 screw feels and plays a whole lot better than my 4 screw driver with a legend shaft.

Nice collection. I had large 2-iron collection as well. Have been parting ways them lately to pursue other projects.

ANY shaft plays and feels better than the legend shaft that Hogan put in clubs....IMHO.

Pretty club!

My addition to this thread: Hogan 25th Anniversary Driver - no speed slot

Probably the prettiest grain in any Hogan head I've ever seen, with the "heart" exactly at the toe of the club

Always loved Hogan persimmons. Here's one I haven't seen in the thread yet - dig the brass backweight!

Those backweighted Hogans might be my favourite Hogan wood design. I have a 1953 Commemorative which is very similar to augustgolf's club above, and the quality of materials and finishing is as good as anything I've seen and a cut above the Apexes. But those backweighted Apexes just seem to launch the ball unlike any other wood that I've played. The only issue I have is that they seem more prone to hooking than comparable clubs. I keep looking for some 4 flex models to compare with the 3s I've got.

I don't know how you can part with that club. You would never find another one with grain like that the rest of your days. It's about the most unique thing I've ever seen!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent
