Wood Bros Lob Wood - high lofted, extra sole weight for higher, faster stopping shots than can be hit with long irons - at least by most amateurs.

Wood Bros also had the Corker - cork filled to raise the center of gravity and lighten the heads for use with longer shafts for distance.

Rut iron and Sand wedge are very descriptive, as is the Stymie iron, for chipping your ball over an opponent's ball on the green - before the rules changed requiring marking balls in an opponent's putting line.

There was a line called Punch irons, once upon a time.

And the Long Jon driver-

I know there's not a lot of TaylorMade love around these parts, but I always thought Pittsburgh Persimmon was pretty clever.

Pretty sure the Classic forum OWNS this topic.

Prompted by timv- I can't think of a cooler name for irons than Titlettes.

And I think we agreed a while back that Jupiter Slugger is probably the greatest ever name for a driver.

What else have you got?

Actually my wife plays (when she plays) with a set of 1974 Titlettes. I have threatened several times to confiscate them and put R-300s in them for me to hit. Actually she plays the 7 thru PW since I built her a couple of hybrids. The only fairway wood she hits is a Cally Steel Head clone 7 wood.

Good thread Birly ! Some of my favourites:

Joe Powell Smoker fairway driver (4-wood head, 3-wood shaft, 2-wood loft)

Joe Powell Pincher wedge (for "pinching" the ball off tight lies)

George Nicoll Howitzer, Ben Hogan Exploder, Spalding Dynamiter (all for blasting out of the sand!)

Ben Hogan Equaliser (not pictured, but I think we have to include this one somewhere :) )

Beckley Ralston Walloper (a driving iron)

The aforementioned Toney Penna JS Driver (the Jupiter Slugger, deep faced and mean!)

Bronty Rustler putter (for when you need to rustle up a few birdies)

Louisville Golf Bluegrass Bomber (a variant of their equally emotive Thumper Max over-sized persimmon driver)

Hickory could be a whole category for this on it's own ... my favourite here is the Tweenie (the club "in between" the Mid Iron and the Mashie distance-wise), but honourable mention to the Bulldog, the Jigger, and the Mongrel Mashie.

<<EDIT: got to add the PGF Little Slammer - an awesome plastic 5-wood ... huge seller down under ! >>

And for the modern crew, the TaylorMade RocketBallz must be the worst name any marketing fool ever came up with ... ever ... !

My wife thinks "Power Thrusts" was/is entirely inappropriate.

And how about "LFF (long flying f----er)" for a driver

"Turfriders" is one of my favorites

My absolute favorite club ever created - '50-'51, '52-'53, and '54-'55 versions.

I like the playability better than my best M85, 693 or any other persimmon driver.

Although I couldn't afford one 20-30 years ago when I was at my very best off the tee.

The '50-'51 red fiber insert 693's big brother and the '52-'53 wbw insert M85's big brother.

Long Flying F---er?

Large F---ing Face?

Let The F---er Fly?

The 3rd one is what I've heard the most.

The 2nd one is what I heard first.

Question for Charley?

I heard the name came from Tommy Armour telling Toney his take on the club.

Like all of them but have a fondness for the Jupiter Slugger of course I like all Toney Penna drivers. I think I have said this before but I have only seen one JS driver in person over the years. One of the hustlers at my Dad's old course had one beat all to crap but he could pound it

Great stuff. Hickory could run away with this - have always fancied a Jigger and a Rutting Iron, but then you also have Spade Mashies, Stymie Irons and even the humble niblick.

I nearly mentioned the Equalizer in my original post. Great name, although I feel that over time the owners cheapened it somewhat by being one of the leaders in loft creep to the point where it's no longer quite the equaliser it should be.

Smoker, Walloper and Bluegrass Bomber - would buy them on the names alone.

They were rubbish, but my first irons were called Pinseeker which I think is quite elegant compared to all the heavy ordnance references.

And at the risk of modernity, I have a soft spot for Trusty Rusty.

Back in the day, I traded for one of their tiny headed 9* drivers- should have been called Treeseeker...

Spalding's Cash-In putter reinforced the "putt for dough" half of the old golf cliche'. Golfsmith resurrected the name for custom wedge heads when they acquired the Spalding brand before their own demise. It's a pretty darn good wedge.

You are correct. My first recollection of LFF -

The first time I saw the stamp on the sole of TP's driver was as follows

Toney came into Chicago for the Tam'oShanter tournaments . He drove to Beverly CC , where my dad was the pro. He threw me the keys to his Cadillac, ( that meant I was to get his clubs, golf shoes, and shag bag). After shining the shoes, making sure the irons were pristine, the woods were Simonized and buffed to sparkle in the sunlight, I met him on the practice range. He knew that I had hit a few balls while he had lunch with my dad. As he walked up to me,he said, "what do you think of my new wrenches?". I told him they looked great, but what was the LFF stamp? Since I was about 13 years old at the time, he told me it was long, fast and far. I knew better, since I had been a looper for five years. Golfers become engrossed in the game, forgetting young kids are there. In my opinion, caddies get a great education by exposure to the deportment of country club members. The names are different, but the cast is the same, wherever the game is played.

I had heard , LFF and many other phrases many times before. Some of the other euphemisms that I recall

Lighter that popcorn

Union Pacific

Hit and hold

Trunk slammer

Quail high

If you want a shot,go see a doctor

In the pocket

You are not that good

CHARLEY PENNA

Worst ever names, the Nike CPR rescue club and the Wilson irons...

Pi5s

Honestly. You're fired.

Funny...I always thought that CPR was a rather clever name for a rescue club. Considerably more thought went into that than Rocketballz...

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Stan Thompson had some interesting nicknames for his creations -- Ball Buster driver, Steamer fairway club and the indomitable Ginty rescue wood.
