Courses near I-65/Nashville

Recommended Posts

Driving from MI to AL for some RTJ Trail golf in April. Want to hit a course on Friday on the way down. Probably will hit the Nashville area around noon.

Finding one near I-65 is key. Greystone piqued my interest until I saw the distance from I-65.

Looking for 20 minutes max from interstate, under $75, has a practice range and decent pace of play. 1-2 hours north of Nashville is okay as long as it's near I-65. Let me know

Thanks!

Gaylord Springs/Opryland fits your requirements: Less than 20 minutes out of the way; price is right; first class operation/customer service; and very nice practice facility.

Other choice, if you can get on via boxgroove.com would be Nashville Golf and Athletic Club. It is located about 10 - 15 minutes south of Nashville, about 10 minutes off I-65 at the Moores Lane Exit. Very nice layout. I'm not sure about the practice facility.

Gaylord Springs looks ideal, but they have an outing on the day we pass through Nashville and only have twilight times available.

Hermitage looks fine as well. Previous GolfWRX threads all mention President's Reserve as the course to play. Any additional feedback on the Hermitage courses?

Hermitage is a great choice, though it is more than 20 minutes off I-65, even in good traffic conditions. The President's Reserve is the newer, more visually attractive, of the two courses. It also has larger landing areas for your drives, and very nice green complexes.

Let me throw out another choice if you want to get further south of Nashville - Montgomery Bell State Park, about 60 minutes south of Nashville, but close to I-65. It is a 1960s (?) design, lots of mature trees, and usually in good condition.

BTW - here is the link for Nashville Golf and Athletic Course - I highly recommend this course if you can get on it - http://ngac.net

KPCC in Franklin. KY or Legacy in Springfield, TN (which might just barely stretch the 20 min off 65 rule). Legacy is a Ray Floyd design public with a full size range. You can leave out of Springfield on US 41 and not have to back track back straight to 65 but gain a little ground.

Between Greystone and Legacy I like Legacy better but both are nice public tracks.

Unless you can get on one of the private courses, Hermitage is your best bet. Friday at noon traffic wont be terrible and I think you could get there in 20 minutes from 65. It's less than 10 miles from the Rivergate exit.

Now if you are planning to continue south after your round, traffic will be a whole new beast. If that is your plan I would look at something south of the city as going south on 65 during rush hour is a nightmare

I'm not a huge fan of the course, but if you are headed south after the round your may want to look at Kings Creek in Spring Hill.

Thanks. I had not considered the traffic through Nashville. I live in Chicago and am not the one doing the driving. We we thinking about teeing off at 1:00 around Nashville and ultimately getting to RTJ/Hampton Cove around 8:00. Playing a course south of Nashville makes sense, but the further south we go, the more it probably makes sense to power through and play a twilight round at Hampton Cove.

Decisions, decisions.

I played both Gaylord Springs and Hermitage President's Reserve. I scored well on both and shot under my index on both. I much, much preferred President's Reserve -- but really like Gaylord Springs too.

President's Reserve had a couple "blind" landings, and you really need to have a GPS or similar to know the end of a couple fairways, depending on tees you play, and your length.

How much of a nightmare? I'm from Chicago. ;)

We are probably going to play Hermitage or Legacy. How long (approximately) would it take to get through the congestion and back to normal speeds on a Friday?

I am always going opposite traffic so I'm probably not the best to put a number to it, but every day around 4-6 I see 65S being a parking lot from 96 to 440. Probably even worse right around the city. If Chicago traffic is the norm you are used to it may not be a big deal to you.

I would estimate adding at least an hour to whatever the estimated trip is if you are trying to leave in that time frame.

You really should consider driving further south before you play. Traffic at the time you would finish your round is usually a disaster, especially on Friday.

Be careful on hwy 76, it is hilly and curvy. Try Willie Mae's BBQ if you need to eat while in Springfield.

We will most definitely be hitting up Willie Mae's! Thank you for the recommendation.

The Legacy and Willie Mae's were great suggestions. Nice enough course for $36 and some of the best brisket I've ever tasted.

They are solid folks with a great product. When I worked there in Springfield you would leave there with that heavy smoke smell you. We got to the point where we didn't call it Willie Mae's we just said "lets go get some smoke."

I like the Legacy. Usually in pretty good condition, especially the greens. I don't think i have ever been there when the greens were in bad shape.

We had a winter a few years back where we had snow, it melted during the day, then the melt water froze back at night a few nights in a row. That really slowed the bermuda coming out of dormancy. It hurt several courses, even courses with zoysia but to a lesser extent.

And after a really, really heavy rain 6, 7 and 16 will flood.

Hopefully playing Harpeth Hills Tuesday morning. Anyone want to join me? Does anyone know current conditions?

I would, but headed to Florida on Sunday. How is the game, how ya been? Still not playing much? I haven't played out there this year so I do not know the conditions but usually it's in great shape.

Recap of my day of golf. I was a single until my 8 year old came along so I didn't make a tee time. Drove from Franklin to Harpeth Hills to find them closed. Drove down to Forest Crossings to find a women's league and no tee times. Called King's Gate with no answer so ended up at Cheekwood. Its a 9 hole course that charged us way too much for what they offer. We played 18 and it was the first time my son has hit balls on a course. He had the time of his life. He even beat me on a hole. I think I have a golf buddy now.

Harpeth was closed? Weird. Cheekwood is actually cheaper than it used to be. It's under new ownership and used to be called Spencer Creek. They say they are going to add another 9 on the other side of the road. Time will tell. Is kind of a last min golf course for me. Meaning, I'll only got there if I have no other options.

Glad you had fun with the kid though
