Simple Grip Question

When you grip the club should your middle and ring finger on your left hand be touching the fat part under your thumb on the left hand? and should those same fingers on the other hand be touching your thumb on the left hand?

if your fingers are touching or indenting into the palm of your hand your grips are too small.

The thumb of the left hand should touch the thumb pad of the right hand. It's also okay for the tips of your ring and middle on the right hand to touch the thumb on the left hand. Also, people say small grips encourage a hook. I've found that it encourages spraying the ball in general.

I was under the impression that if your grips were too small, you would tend to "strangle" the club (i.e. have a tighter hand pressure) which would prevent you from properly releasing the club (i.e. resuling in an open clubface). Some clarification would be great.

For a righty, I think the left hand's mid fingers touching the thumb pad is ok. Digging in would be bad.

 

I think that if you take a normal, goog, in-the-finger grip on a club that is too small, you'll find that your left hand would have to wrap over the top of the club more (again, assuming that the club is properly in your fingers), which would lead to a stronger grip. When you take a strong grip, the tendency is to close the clubface more at impact, resulting in draws/hooks.

 

If you compensate for a grip that's too small by holding it more in the palm, then I could see where you'd stangle the club -- and, a grip that's more in the hands typically isn't good anyway, so it could lead to weak/right shots.

 

But I'd be inclined to think that a decent golfer with a sound grip would grip a small cluub more strongly.

 

When considering this stuff, think of extremes. Think of gripping a baseball bat (can't get it in the fingers enough) vs. gripping a pencil (with your finger in the right spot, you'd have to wrap your thumb over your finger tips, and the grip would be super-strong).
