I'm playing Deere Run on the 26th for the first time, so I can't speak from experience, but I've heard some decent things about Fyre Lake. We're playing there Sunday the 25th before we hit Deere Run.

I have not played it, but saw pictures of Frye Lake. Looks really nice. Also, I don't recall the name, but there is a casino course across the river in Iowa that is getting a lot of press. Might want to google it.

Used to live in the QC area, and Fyre Lake is really solid. Glynn's Creek is good value and not too bad. I think the casino course mentioned above might be Riverside/Blue Top Ridge? It's south of Iowa City though, so maybe not.

Indeed! TPC Deere Run is the clear winner in the QCA. Some private clubs are excellent as well, but unfortunately not a ton of top tier public courses in the area. Oakwood in Coal Valley (previously hosted the John Deere/Hardee's Golf Classic/QC Open) is a very fun track too. It's a Pete Dye course design and for some reason I always seem to play well (except holes #4 and 6). I heard they opened it up to semi-private maybe?

I've heard good things about Arsenal and never played it. And I should... my sister works for the Fed.

 

(I was thinking of Credit Island if memory serves me correctly...)

Yes, got it. Sorry for my oops above. My mind immediately went back to Credit Island muni I played as a child... and that is not worthy of the list to play, by the way... :taunt:

 

As for Rock Island Arsenal course, I've never played it. I've always heard it's in good condition typically, but nothing more.

I'll be out that way to play Cedar Rapids CC and Davenport CC in Sept. Wanted to add a 3rd course.

^^^ with those on the list, I'm not sure the Arsenal course would be in that class. I've played Des Moines CC (thumbs up), but not CR CC. I fear the Arsenal course may leave you feeling empty... even though I haven't played it. I thought I recalled my sister telling me it was a 9-hole course, but I may be wrong.

If I plyed Arsenal first, it would be ok. I love military courses.

If you are willing to take a drive, Spirit Hollow in Burlington is a lot fun. If not, Glynns Creek and Arsenal are decent tracks. Might be worth a phone call to Davenport Country Club or Crow Valley Country Club, I think they both allow unaccompanied players. I have played Fyre Lake once (2 years ago), I liked the layout, but the conditions were poor.

Try 309-793-1604 or 1601 for The Arsenal. They're open. It's an older course, narrow and tree lined. First five holes play along the Mississippi, pretty cool to see. Be aware you need to get a background check to get on the island. Takes 20 - 30 minutes depending on how busy they are. And don't speed on the island, 25 mph means just that.

 

Highland Springs is a Rock Island muni. Not a bad layout, can be challenging from the back tees. Greens have some big breaks depending on where the pins are located. I haven't played there this year so I don't know the conditions.

 

Have fun at Deere Run, consider playing it twice. Deere Run sets a pretty high bar for the rest of the public courses in the area.

We are playing there as our afternoon round. With it being a base do they serve beer on the course?

They serve beer on The Arsenal. You won't come back to the clubhouse at nine so ask the clubhouse attendant if the halfway house is open or if there's a beverage cart available.

Fyre Lake, as of 2014, is as good as Deere Run. It may require some driving, but Spirit Hollow in Burlington, Iowa is a great course as well.

If you go north a hour or so the General at eagle ridge resort by galena Illinois is pretty nice.

Not quite.

 

Layout, course conditions, practice facility, clubhouse, greens, bunkers, amenities, restaurant, access, challenge, scenery all favor Deere Run.

 

The only advantage Fyre Lake has is cost.

 

Don’t get me wrong, I like Fyre Lake. But it’s not in the class of Deere Run.

Played both over the weekend and Deere Run is head and shoulders above Fyre Lake in terms of conditions. But the layout of Fyre Lake is top notch. With a little more money to help maintain the conditions this course would be one of the top spots in Illinois. Deere Run was fantastic. Can't believe Goydos shot a 59 there.
